Please stop the scrolling announcements - memory hog

Post by posnpretty »

Please stop the scrolling announcement about this competition, and please don't use it, ever. It is a huge memory resource hog and distracting. You wouldn't want to drive new users away, would you?

Thanks,
Cyndi

Hi Cindi,

The scrolling announcement is not the problem with this forum. It's the old, outdated phpBB that is being used. Steve and I both have tried unsuccessfully to get Corel to update, add some Mods to the web board. There are also other variables that may cause the web board to run slow. Believe me, we have taken notice of this, and there's nothing that the staff can do. We have also tried using a static announcement, but that did not have any affect on the speed of the web board.

We want the announcement to be noticed. Especially when Corel is sponsoring contests. So no, we are not going to remove it, sorry...:(

Oh, I moved your post to a more appropriate forum. The contest forum was not the place for it..;)

By memory hog, I didn't mean that the board runs slow. I meant that it uses up MY computer's memory resources and practically locks up my PC. Task Manager shows that 100% of resources are in use, until the scrolling is gone. I have 2GB RAM, which should be plenty, but when I first enter the landing page of the forums, all my memory is used.

I know it is the scrolling announcement that causes this, because another phpbb forum that I frequent used to have scrolling banners which did the same thing to me (and not everyone else). When they went to rotating banners hosted off of the board, then the forum quit using up my PC memory.

I disagree that the scrolling announcement gets user's attention. All it does for a lot of folks is turn them away. At least once I click on the particular forum I want to view and the scrolling is gone, then my PC is no longer hanging.

Thanks for the info, and for moving my post. I had no idea where to place it.

I have monitored the Task Manager on my computer and compared it to the readings whilst I display that particular page, and then display a completely static page. There was no alteration in the readings.
