How do you add a simple Fade in/out effect to a single video, in VS? In DVDMF it is a simple click for each.

I know there are all kinds of transitions and overlays but the transition will only allow me to add them between videos.

I tried reading through the help but still couldn't figure it out?

For fade-in, insert a black colour matte (image) and adjust its length down to 2 or 3 seconds. Then the cross-fade transition, then the video clip. For fade-out, you do the reverse, though you can also use the fade to black transition instead of the cross-fade, if you use a black colour matter.

There are a variety of colour mattes in the same drop-down menu as where you find the transitions, filters, images etc...

It needs to fade in from something and fade out to something.
If you want it to fade in from black adn out to black, add ablack still before the video starts and adjust size to how long you want the fade to be and fade in from it and out to it.

Out of curiosity, how does DVDMF do it? This way or some other vodoo?

MF uses the same principle, only it is automated i.e. when you click on the fade-in icon, it then automatically inserts both a black colour panel and the cross-fade transition. It would be nice to have this automatic effect in VS, but I guess they have to maintain some differences between the two programs.

It's curious, though, that since VS is primarily a video editing program, that it does not already have this essential editing function included. On the other hand, MF is only supposed to have basic editing functions, but includes this both useful and relatively sophisticated editing tool...

You can also place your video clip(s) on an overlay track and use the Fade-In/Fade-Out bars located on the Attribute tab. Adjust the duration of the fade using the small rectangles (pause/duration) beneath the preview screen.

I would suspect DVDMF is using something similar to those Fade-In/Out bars for the overlay tracks in VS. However in DVDMF6, in the Edit Room when you apply a Fade-In, you see a transition being placed in the timeline..
