Video Capture

Post by auldyin »

Hi,
I'm new to the Video Capture process and would like to transfer some old VHS Video tapes to my HD prior to editing with Video Studio Plus 11.5 (I think).

Everything is working fine as far as hardware, leads etc are concerned but now I need to formally start the process. Trouble is that I do not have a clue which format to use because they will have to be edited and some, no doubt, will require to be compressed and I understand the problem about compressing already compressed files.

In short, what I am asking is:
What settings do I use to transfer my tapes to the hard drive?

Cheers

Use Default

The program is set to default to AVI which is in reality a vessel for video. You can change to MPEG, but since you wish to edit later you can save it to compressed format at that time. Hope this helps.

Champion, I'll have a go at that.

Next question (again, please excuse my ignorance)
What settings do I use for:
1. Colour space (YUY2, UYVY, or RGB 32, 24,16)
2. Frame size

Do Not Know

Those questions are subjective. I assume you may be from England and are using PAL. I also assume you are talking about your edited version. I would try a short clip in them all and see what looks best to you. My guess is you will want 4:3 for older VHS because I do think any of the VHS camcorders were 16:9 although I could be wrong on that. Last is play around with the editing because you will probably find the quality of VHS will never be like digital. Good Luck and maybe you will get some better help from other users.

Thank you!!

PS
I live in Scotland, the name auldyin is a term of endearment for "old person".
Others may suggest that auldyin means Boring Old Fart
