Buyers beware.

Post by 2Dogs »

I was confusing VS with another program, that lists several Sony AVCHD models as being compatible with the program, and no Canon ones. At least with that program, you know before you buy that it supports or doesn't support your camcorder.

Now we know from the Corel "Support" response to one AVCHD Canon owner that his model is not supported - yet I can find no listing anywhere on the Corel site showing which camcorders are - just a blanket claim to support for AVCHD camcorders, which in the circumstances I believe to be misleading, and even in contravention of some trading laws.

Perhaps there should be some sort of warning on a camcorder box, along the lines of the ones found on - paper and tobacco device for smoking - odd that the word for this is censored - packets, to the effect "beware - no compatible editing software exists for this product".

I have suggested something along similar lines several times since AVCHD, or more specifically the problems of editing it, first emerged. Instead, the camera manufacturers trumpet all the positives about the format and unsurprisingly nothing about its negatives. Not even that at least a Core 2 Duo is required. And the software manufacturers all claim they can handle it!

Now CUDO is on to help! Really, judging from Power Director and now also TMPGEnc Express it's a great remedy!

Hi Ron,
Sorry about the violations.
So from reading the rules again I would assume the discussion which ensued be allowed in the "general discussion" section of the forum? Could a link in this discussion pointing to the "general discussion" section be permitted? I for one have both programmes and use both. I think other AVCHD users might find the various work arounds and alternatives useful information.

As Corel support requested, I have uploaded sample files to their ftp site. I uploaded a clip from my Sony SR-11, and a file created by Pro X2 from that clip (and which shows the transitions problem). I also uploaded a clip from a Canon HF100 that was provided by Efenstor, with a note that Canon users are experiencing this problem too.

Hopefully they can re-create the problem on their PC's, will agree that it is a program bug, and will refer it to the developers for a fix.

When I get a response from Corel, I will post what they said.

Power Director is not able to make full HD AVCHD file (maybe it is feature of trial version) unfortunately.

Great

I have to apologize with Pixela Image Writer and start to work with it and TSSplitter.
VS 12 will be used ONLY for audio editting (not worth about 50 bucks !), not touching video files.

I am still waiting for patch from Corel, but frankly speaking every day makes my hope a little bit smaller :(

I probably follow Przemek's workflow (avchd->hd mpeg2)

not quite good option in my opinion.
The same quality - almost two times bigger file.
It is a pity to lose original AVCHD file - it is like a pearl

if you use quality sw for decoding files you will see no difference and the output could have size about 50% bigger). This workflow is far from ideal but do you know something better? Of course I prefer patch from Corel but if you see how they solve the problem...

I agree that the original AVCHD file is "like a pearl", but so far I haven't managed to come up with anything better.
As far as the size is concerned - there is no difference really when you record an AVCHD disk - about 25 minutes on a single layer disk with CBR of 16800 (that's what Ken recommends). I think it is worth trying - as I've already written in another post - editing is truly great - reminds of old days and working with DV tapes.

I presume that you probably mean m2t (which is mpeg2) files. To convert mts to these I use Up-Shift (trial available on net - reduced length to 10 s which is enough to try it).

However, if you mean m2ts files, then Pixela Image Mixer does a very good job.

I did not express my question properly (that's my English), so again:

what kind of files do you edit in VS12 (as I understand there are not mts files) ?
How do you achieve them ?
