I am trying to alter the length of the clip using the Video Duration buttons in edit mode. However, as I reduce the length of the clip, the numbers jump from 0:00:04:00 to 0:00:03:24. It happens with any clip I try to alter the length of. It occurs when I try and trim with the handles as well.
Also, it shortens the clip from the end. Can I choose to reduce the clip from the beginning?

Two things. The only way you can reduce the duration of a clip is to actually edit it by cutting out a part you don't want.
Second, you are in a PAL country which uses a video speed of 25 frames per second. The clock you refer to is set out as Hours:minutes:seconds:frames. So if you start with a 4 second video, it would should as 0:00:04:00 but if you reduce it by one frame, it will then be 0:00:03:24, exactly as shown in the example you gave.

But further to Clevo's suggestion, you need to be aware that the 'shortening' of the clip using the trim handles is only 'virtual'. It is the same as if you dragged the triangular trim handles immediately below the preview window right or left. The only 'real' reduction in duration is to actually cut the video clip at the point where you really want it to start, then use Clip > Save Trimmed Video. That will create a completely new file of your cut video. The original will remain unchanged and uncut, however, should you need to use it again later.
