WinDVD problems after DVD9.0.14.91_63207_Plus_iUpgrade

Post by Sirandar »

I applied the DVD9.0.14.91_63207_Plus_iUpgrade when it came out and thought all was well because my Blue Planet and Planet Earth Blu-rays played properly.

When I rented "The Other Boleyn Sister" Blu-ray it didn't play, just spun for a few seconds at low speed and then WinDVD switched from play to stop with no error and no crash. Did the whole reinstall song and dance, upgraded firmware and video drivers ..... still wouldn't play

Then I noticed that noticed that my "The Host" HD-DVD no longer plays - crashes WinDVD after a few seconds (no error message). Removed the latest patch "DVD9.0.14.91_63207_Plus_iUpgrade" and reinstalled and my HD-DVD plays again. Apply patch again and HD-DVD doesn't play again. After removing the patch I don't know if the "The Other Boleyn Sister" Blu-Ray will play as I have returned it.

Seems the patch breaks quite a few things in WinDVD9 which is ironic because my Video card Nvidia 8800GTS is supposed to be supported better. Is there a better patch coming?

IMO, the patch has issues and shouldn't be used as it definately breaks HD-DVD on my system.

Here is my specs:

E6750 Core2 with 2GB
Nvidia 8800GTS
LG GCC-H20L
Auzentech Meridian Sound

Don't install this patch

Post by Sirandar »

After repeated unfruitful email exchanges and telephone support the inescpabale conclusion is " Don't apply this patch" They have no clue why it doesn't work on my system and I tried all of the generic suggestions they had.

The patch breaks some titles but not others and you will always be guessing.

Since the patched WinDVD has 100% CPU usage on one core when WinDVD crashes I am guessing that this is a Core2 compatibilty issue that has crept back in.

Fortunately the unpatched version (file version 2.11.15.0) works flawlessly on my system

Same problems with the patch.

Old version works flawlessly for me except for my Multi-sound card problem.

Resolved by changing video card

From the OP

Swapped out Asus 8800GTS 320 for a BFG 8800GT 512 ... no more issues.

Same system, same software same vid driver version.

Looks like the patch doesn't like the 8800GTS 320 but I never tried removing this card and reinstalling in another slot so it could still possibly be a PNP issue.
