X2 Pro - jerky even frozen preview

I installed VS12 (trial version) on my Quad PC (Vista). I tested with the proxy enabled. I have put 2 AVCHD files on trach 1 for 90% in crossover (crosfade), added two titels in the overlay tracks and 2 audio files on the sound tracks. After a few seconds I can preview the combination without any jerkyness. I wonder in how far the GPU is involved...I have NVidia 8600GS.

I have downloaded the second of your clips. But I get the same as you describe, both in Clip mode and in Project mode. And when I render it to a new AVCHD, it plays the same. So I really have no idea what is going on. The only other time I have had trouble with AVCHD has been with a Panasonic SD9, but like you Canon, the only program which can play it is apparently the Panasonic one which came with it. It seems that Panasonic has developed its own codec which other software packages cannot read properly -- though I heard that the latest Cyberlink Power Director may be able to at least play and edit the Panasonic clips correctly. You could always download the trial of that and see if it will play your Canon ones -- because I begin to think maybe Canon have a new codec too...

bankroot, I agree that there may be a problem with Pro X2 and AVCHD. It has trouble with your Canon clips, and I have similar issues with my Sony clips. Your clips actually played better on my system than my own Sony clips.

There was a thread in the forum about a week ago that referenced a recent review of Pro X2 in PC Magazine in which the reviewer dinged the program for slow handling of AVCHD, specifically the lack of smooth preview. I quote the article:

"...when I asked Corel about AVCHD preview on the timeline, they confirmed that slow AVCHD playback was a known issue that they were "working to fix" in the next update of VideoStudio."

I hope the "next update" means a patch for Pro X2, not that we have to wait for Pro X3.

I tried the trial of Cyberlink Power Director 7. It previewed AVCHD smoothly and was generally more responsive in other aspects of editing. However, some clips I rendered to disc had pixalization in areas of fine detail such as grass. This didn't happen in all clips, but enough to make me decide against buying it. I hope your experience with your Canon clips is better.

Pro X2, while slow with AVCHD, did not cause pixalization in the same clips, and has a few more features.

OK dalemccl, I won't try with Cyberlink. Your test make me sure, that problem is in Pro X2, not in my PC ore something.

I like Ulead software (used to use for many years) and what is most important, my wife likes it too

(she is very familiar with interface and makes all commentaries and text), so I will wait for patch.

I downloaded the middle clip and it plays fine in 'clip' mode on my Quad, but in 'project' mode stutters badly. This is the same result I get from from my Panasonic SD9. Its my understanding that when playing back in 'project' mode Video Studio converts the file to the project properties setting, while playing back in 'clip' mode no conversion takes place and it plays back in its current format. Video Studio doesn't allow the project properties to be set matching a AVCHD 1920x1080 5.1dolby clip to eliminate the conversion process.

Actually when I insert my clip into Timeline and preview it in PROJECT mode, evereything is going smoothly (I can see that Smart Proxy starrt to work - resolution degradation is visible).
In CLIP mode I can see jerkiness.

So, I still prefer to edit my footage in Pixela and waitin' for patch

Hi guys! New to this forum, but I have been using videostudio since vers. 7, using various camcorders, analog and DV, now AVCHD.

Now using X2, I observe exactly the same symptoms as the other posters on this thread.
Pixela and MediaCenter plays AVCHD perfectly, no problems.

X2 with proxys allready created for clips:

Jerky preview when showing clips, whether they are chosen directly from library or selected from timeline. The proxy is not used, although created, this is clear from the high resolution. This also affects the multitrim tool, also using full resolution, when it should be using the proxy.

Nice smooth preview if the "project" mode is selected and played in preview window! Here it is clear the proxy is used, as the resolution is down.

My conclusion is that there is an bug resulting in the proxy not being used when "clips" are previewed.

A new observation I think no one else have mentioned is the fact that if you preview in "clip" mode as described above, with jerky performance, and then switch the right side tabs from "Video" to "attribute" then the proxy will be played instead, smooth but lower res!

Welcome to the forum. I just tried it and you're right, it does play the proxy file when "attribute" is selected!! Good observation. I had never noticed/tried that. The audio didn't play for some reason, just the video. But the video was smooth. Did you get audio with the video, or just the video?

I agree that this probably a bug in the software. However, it is possible that they designed it that way for a reason. I sent an e-mail to tech support yesterday asking why the proxy files aren't used when previewing individual clips. If they respond, I will post their response.

Unfortunately I also lack the audio when the attribute is selected.
Hopefully there will be a bugfix to this jerky preview problem soon!
