I have an object that I am using as a background, with text in the foreground.
I would like to fill the backgorund object with an image on my pc so I add a thumbnail in the My Gallery area of the toolbar. Problem is the image is much larger than the object. Is there a way so PI will stretch the image to fit the object? Aspect Ratio does not really matter terribly.

I'll also add that using the method I mentioned, does not provide for the background to be transparent. In other words, you get a white or black color surrounding the image pasted into the selection.
If you do need this, you could use the Extract Object, or one of the Selection tools, to cut around the object. Then copy/paste it. Here's an example:
