I am using Ulead Video Sudio 11.
I made a movie and saved it as avi on my desktop.
I open up Ulead, click video studio editor, share, create DVD.
I add my movies, make the title slide.
When it goes to render the movie... it freezes at 99% of rendering video 1.
Nothing will stop it and I have to cold boot my computer.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, did a disk clean up on c drive, and nothing works! It freezes every time. I have done many movies so I don't know why this is happening now (last movie I did like this was 6months ago though).

Of course, I plan to show this movie at a birthday party in 1 day and can't get it to a dvd now.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Almost there!
Take the avi file form the desktop and import it to the VS timeline. Go directly to Share and select Create Video File and choose PAL or NTSC DVD whichever is correct for your area. You are NOT burning a DVD here you are creating a DVD cmpliant MPEG2 file.

When that is done, go to File and select New Project. You do this to clear the timeline of the avi file that will still be on the timeline. Then go directly to Share and select to Create Disc. When the burning module opens import the MPEG2 file you created into the module, follow the steps for menus etc and then burn.

AVI is not a DVD-compliant format.

Try this. With your project in the timeline go to Share>Create Video File and choose the DVD template for your region (NTSC or PAL). This will create a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 file.

After that file is created clear your timeline (File>New Project). Go to Share>Create Disc. When the burn window opens use the Insert Media option to insert your MPEG-2 file onto the burning timeline. Make sure the burn properties match the properties of your MPEG-2 file.

I should have been more specific too.
I should say that I actually had two differnet problems:

1. I tried to add the newly created AVI to the DVD and that one burned ok, UP UNTIL the last moment of finalizing the disk... then it froze forever. I cold booted the computer, took out the DVD and it played the menu on my dvd player, however, when I played the movie from the menu, there was no sound (only video). So I will recreate it in a non-avi and try it again. Thanks for that tip.

2. After that didn't work above, I tried to test and make another dvd with a 30sec clip of a video (this type of video, was 'video clip' when you right click/properties under type of video). This is the one that froze at 99% of rendering it... it didn't even get to the burning stage like above. I have made DVD's with these type of short clips before ('video clip' or 'movie clip').
Any thoughts on this?

You say you are right clicking the files, but I guess you are doing that in My Computer or Windows Explorer, right? *Wrong*! You need to right click on them INSIDE Video Studio -- when they are either in the timeline or in the library pane. Then please copy down ALL the Properties here please. We *know* it is a video clip. But we need to know WHAT kind of video clip. You see, there are over 800 different types of video which use the .avi extension, and some of them can be difficult to edit. So we need to know what we are dealing with here...

I made the file with DVD format. Went to burn it to a DVD and at 99% of rendering the menu (makes it to 99% fairly quickly and then stops)... froze for 5-6 min and locked the computer. I had to cold boot it again.

Try this. (For completeness I will explain the full process from camcorder to DVD)

Step 1.
Shoot your video.

Step 2.
Transfer the video to your computers hard drive.
How you do this will depend upon what kind of camcorder you have
DV - use firewire (IEEE1394)
DVD - take the disc out of the camcorder and place it into the DVD tray and use the import from DVD function.
Hard Drive Camcorders - connect it to the computer with either a USB or Firewire lead and transfer the contents from the camcorder hard drive to your computers hard drive.

Step 3.
Open VideoStudio and import the Video to the time line

Step 4.
Edit the video by removing any unwanted material - sprucing it up with titles and special effects etc.

Step 5.
Render this out as a new DVD compliant MPEG2 file.
Here you can use the predefined DVD templates found on the [Share] tab - create video, or you can alter the bit rates if your video is too long (duration) to fit on the DVD disc (single layer - 1 hour) so that you can get more on the disc e.g. 90 minutes (long play) or 2 hours (extended long play)

Step 6.
Start a new project (Clears the time line)

Step 7.
Go to the [Share] tab and select [Create Disc]

Step 8.
Import the new MPEG2 video from step 5.

Step 9.
Optional - create chapters.

Step 10.
Create your Menus.

Step 11.
To avoid the problems you had burning to a disc, select burn to a hard drive folder.

Step 12.
Upon completion of step 11 check the "DVD" on your hard drive with a software player such as WinDVD. PowerDVD, Nero Showtime etc.

If you are happy with the result, use your favourite DVD burning software to burn a Video DVD disc from the hard drive folder.

Only problem is, I don't have another DVD burning program. Ulead is all I have to get it to the physical DVD so I can pop it into a standard DVD player to a TV.

I think its a part of the VideoStudio Bonus Material but you should have a copy of Ulead Disc Image Recorder.
In addition to being able to burn to a hard drive folder you can also burn a disc image. In fact when you select burn disc image it will create a hard drive folder. Only thing is if you do not select both options and only select disc image it then deletes the folder because it considered it to be a temporary item. By selecting both it will create and retain both.

You can then use Disc Image Recorder to burn the disc image to your DVD disc.

I don't seem to have received the Disc Image Recorder since VS10. Could Corel have dropped in its own more recent versions?

They've always included it, however they have hidden it's install folder. IIRC, it's in the Bonus content.

Any idea, however, why it freezes on me? Although I haven't made a dvd in months... it never use to do this..... and it even does it after unloading it and reloading the program??? Could it be something in the registry?
