WinDVD 8 DVD playback stops after a few secs with a strange

Post by Tilman »

... error message

Nature of the problem
Playback of every DVD stops after a few seconds, and a green message appears in the WinDVD playback window, saying:

Stopp
Die Wiedergabe von geschützten Inhalten wird von Ihrer Anzeigekonfiguration nicht unterstützt.

(English translation:
Stop
The playback of protected contents is not supported by your display configuration.)

Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?)
Standard commercial movie DVDs bought in several retail stores in Germany. All of them play fine on my DVD player, on my wife's laptop computer which came with PowerDVD, and on a Linux PC.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
MSI Hermes 651P barebone PC with built-in DVD drive, CRT monitor connected by VGA cable (also tried with LCD display, makes no difference), pair of speakers connected by normal 2,5 mm audio plug, standard 105 key keyboard connected by PS/2 connector, Logitech Trackman Marble pointing device connected by PS/2 connector.

Project Properties
no project involved

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)
VGA display

PAL or NTSC
PAL

Error Codes (if any)
Stopp
Die Wiedergabe von geschützten Inhalten wird von Ihrer Anzeigekonfiguration nicht unterstützt.

(English translation:
Stop
The playback of protected contents is not supported by your display configuration.)

additional information

Post by Tilman »

A few additional bits of information that might help assessing the problem:

1. The message

Code: Select all

Stopp
Die Wiedergabe von geschützten Inhalten wird von Ihrer Anzeigekonfiguration nicht unterstützt.
isn't mentioned anywhere in the documentation but I found a handful of reports of it in various online fora. Each time however, either the question itself or the responses were about playing one of the restricted new High Definition contents requiring an unbroken encryption chain with HDMI and the like. In my case, there is no High Definition or Premium content involved. I just try to play an ordinary Video DVD.

2. I tried to contact Corel support about that but was told the copy of WinDVD I bought in an online shop was an OEM version (seems I've been ripped off) and that therefore they wouldn't help me.

Me too

Post by RickinSav'h »

I'm using Win DVD 9 Gold. It was obtained via my purchase of MovieFactory Pro 7. Part of the bonus software. I've used it before for playing regular DVD's but this evening it starts up and within a couple of seconds I get a message the reads:
STOP
YOUR DISPLAY ENVIRONMENT DOES NOT SUPPORT PROTECTED CONTENT PLAYBACK
For what it's worth Windows media player 11 & Nero Showtime play the DVD fine.

I guess we shouldn't expect any help with this.
Better look for an alternative product.

Check your Video Card display settings to make sure it isn't set to dual output.

Linux solved my problem

Post by Tilman »

Just to keep you posted:

In the meantime I switched from Windows to Linux.
The system came with a big choice of DVD player programs.
I tried several of them, and all of them played my DVDs just fine.
None of them complained about my display environment not supporting anything.

Hope that helps someone,
Tilman
