Failed to open the mpeg encoder
Hi
Usual apologies if this has already been addressed but couldn't find it.
Downloaded upgrade of X2 (from VS8). Download and installation worked but when I share/create video file etc etc. I get the message above. Never had anything remotely like this with earlier versions.
Is it something with the mpeg format I selected (mpe2 as opposed to mepg 4) or is it more sinister like the wrong codec or Div X?
Many thanks.
Tony

Mpeg encoder problem
Forgot to say that the the prog seems to be able to convert project to mepg 4 but not mpeg 2! That's is when you get the error message.
Thanks

Failed to open the mpeg encoder
Ken
I feel suitably chastised as ever.
This is the synopsis:
The source was Canon DV630i
I captured in raw DV Type 1 as I have always done
The project (recent holiday) is a biggie-2.5 hours
I selected share/create etc and chose mpeg (not mpeg 4)
Left the default video and audio settings aside from aspect ratio
These are the proposed mpeg properties:
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 3/2(L,C,R,SL,SR)
Other than the length there aint nothing fancy in the project just transitions.
Maybe the bit rate will produce an unsustainable video file? My intention was to create ISO image and reduce that with Shrink as I have done since time immemorial with earlier versions of VS.
Thanks

Red Herring
Hi
File size is irrelevant it seems. Have just tried a test with a 45 minute video clip and I get the same message "Failed to open the mpeg encoder"

Do you have a program like GSpot or Sherlock which can tell you if you indeed have a working mpeg-2 encoder on your computer. It could be that the one installed by VS has become corrupted somehow or not registered. Or it might not have been installed. Did you by any chance uninstall VS8 after you installed X2? If so, then just possibly the mpeg-2 codec could have been removed or (again) become corrupted.
Reinstalling X2 might help (and/or VS8) ... or searching for an mpeg-2 encoder via Google ... or (gulp) selecting one (but not the whole lot) from a mega-codec pack...
And if you are producing a DVD, as you would know, you need mpeg-2 and not mpeg-4 which is not part of the international DVD standard.

Thanks Ken
Before purchasing X2 I had the trial version of 11.5 Plus which I was only able to use for a month. Prior to that I had VS8 but had uninstalled that a while ago.
I think you have a point in that somewhere between VS8/11.5 Plus and X2 I lost my mpeg encoder. I don't have the progs you mentioned but will download and check for active encoders.
Three more questions If I may:
If I locate an encoder how would I know if it was that bundled with X2?
I downloaded this as previously stated. If I wish to reinstall would you recommend using the orginal link that Corel gave me in their e-mail (I have the product key etc), or using the install file now in my programs folder (not confident about identifying this if you suggest the latter)
When I downloaded the prog there was a message about registering the product and I selected the register later option. Would this have affected the functionality of the mpeg encoder?
Many thanks for your time.

The relevant codec would be branded MainConcept.
As for the downloaded installation file, I am not sure I can help with the name of the downloaded file. I got the Ultimate version and it all came in one big bundle. But I understand that the Pro and vanilla versions come in different packages which may have different names. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you on that.
Registration has no effect on the functionality of the program at all, not one little bit. Registration is only about later getting technical assistance from Corel, and as with the upgrade to VS11.5+, patches etc which may only be available to registered users.

mpeg encoder
Just tried Sherlock which identified the following encoder amongst others:
Roxio MPEG2 Encoder
FileVersion = 9.1.5.11
CompanyName = Sonic Solutions
FileDescription = ROXIO MPEG2 Codec
InternalName = MPEG1VidCodec.DLL
LegalCopyright = Copyright © 1994-2006 Sonic Solutions
OriginalFileName = MPEG2VidCodec.DLL
ProductName = MPEG Services
ProductVersion = 9.1.5.11
All other things being equal are there known compatibility probs between Corel and Roxio products?
I am trying to resolve this with Corel direct but it occurs that downloading a free mpeg 2 encoder might not necessarilly solve the problem.
Is the Main Concept encoder always the one bundled with Corel products? Should the prog theoretically identify and work with any encoder?
Many thanks

This is becoming more bizarre by the hour.
Now found that I can create mpeg 2 file if I cahnge audion properties from default to mpeg.
Message only appears if you use Dolby Digital audio properties.

Hi
Seem to be OK with mpeg 2 conversion (so long as you don't use Dolby Digital audio!).
In relation to codecs I have used GSpot and Sherlock as advised but didn't find the results particularly user friendly to interpret (I've only got a Masters Degree). I therefore used the approach where you go into Windows Media Player/help/About WMP/Technical info (using Vista Home Edition 32 bit) and got the following results:

That's useful, though possibly in a negative sort of way. First, there is no reference at all to a Dolby codec/filter being on your system. In my WMP read-out it is listed first in the audio part of 'MPEG/DVD Filters":
Next, and whether this is relevant or not, I don't know, I have a number of MainConcept mpeg codecs/filters listed. One video and one audio one are designated (Adobe2) and again, from GSpot, I know these are assigned to my installation of Adobe Premiere Pro 3. The others I am assuming are the ones that VS uses. They are:
But it is the missing Dolby one which has me puzzled...
And I know that is the one VS installed and uses from way back...audio AC3Filter ac3DX.ax 1.0.1.0
Next, and whether this is relevant or not, I don't know, I have a number of MainConcept mpeg codecs/filters listed. One video and one audio one are designated (Adobe2) and again, from GSpot, I know these are assigned to my installation of Adobe Premiere Pro 3. The others I am assuming are the ones that VS uses. video MainConcept (MCPro Plugin) MPEG Video Decoder mpromcdsmpeg.ax 1.0.0.73
audio MainConcept (MCPro Plugin) MPEG Audio Decoder mpromcdsmpeg.ax 1.0.0.73
These two are not called Ulead by Gspot but 'LEAD'... But in any case we have the same Ulead ones listed, though you have the extra Ulead one designated as Ulead MPEG Audio Decoder ulDVDAudio.ax 2.0.0.57video Ulead DVD Video decoder 2 ulDVDVideo.ax 2.0.0.36
