Unable tp add chapter menu to DVD using X2

Post by markpritch »

Hi guys
Now that I am using VS X2 and have a totally different problem to the earlier one I thought it an idea to start a new thread.

I am using X2 free trial download on windows Xp home edition and, after removing a flying flip transition from my completed project, have created a video file ready for burning to a DVD.

When I add the video file to the Create DVD page I can see the first chapter (the opening scene) but the monitor is blank (has no video on it) the jog bar is absent and the Add Chapter Icon is greyed out.

When I select Add Auto Chapters (which is not greyed out) in an attempt to get someting on the screen I get an error message advising the system needs to shut down.

I have recently installed the latest version of DirectX but this does not appear to have helped.

Would appreciate your help.
Cheers

I had the exact same problem until I updated DirectX. Since I use Vista I didn't think this suggestion applied to me but indeed it did.

Thanks bwentzel, I have already tried that as I had seen from previous posts that it appears to help.

Today I tried, as a test, to create a DVD direct from the project (not recommended) and I was able to see my 'video' and edit chapters.
I am now about to attempt to finish the DVD from the project and will see whether the menu/chapters work on the finished item.

In previous attempts they have not done so and in trying to select a chapter from the main menu the DVD has crashed. This happened when using VS10, which is why I took advice to create a video file first but I am now trying it on VSx2, so we'll see if the outcome is any different.

Cheers

My first attempt to create a DVD directly from my project has failed.

Having established the sound and image menus, followed by the chapters I found I was unable to see a preview using the virtual controller.

When I clicked on 'Play' I could see the white bar gradually filling with blue as it was getting ready to download the project but as it got to 100pct mark the bar disappeared and I was left with a blank screen.

I carried on to the Burn page and started the process but this was stopped at some stage with an error message that said 'Unspecified Error'

There was a yellow triangle to the left of the message box with a black exclamation mark within. Underneath were the numbers 5.0.0.

Is it perhaps time to give up on VS and purchase a totally different product??

I have just attempted to open up this project in VS10, after having done some work on it using VSX2, and it will not open. I've also tried to do this with another project I have been working on.
They were both originally created on VS10 but I have worked on them both on VSX2 over the last few days.
Now I cannot open either on VS10, only on VSX2.
Surely these projects should be interchangeable between the 2 programmes. Is that so?

Could I have a bug in my PC that may be causing all these problems??
Thanks

If you worked on the project in X2 and saved it, it would have been saved as an X2 format project. You would need, in X2 to resave it (with another name) but choosing to save it specifically as a VS10 project.

Hi Ken
Thanks. I don't think I did save as a different name so looks like I may have lost it as a VS10 project now.
Do you have any thoughts on my problems with regards my inability to add chapters (at top of this thread) and the more recent problem I had with the 'Unspecified Error' when trying to create a DVD direct from my project?
I'm beginning to tear my hair out and I don't have a lot left!

Thanks
Mark

PS I've just looked at all my VS files, even the earlier versions of my two projects which have never been worked on in VSX2, and they all have (in properties) Corel VS12 doc. Some of these have not even been opened since I downloaded the trial version. Can I possibly change their properties back again?

Hi Guys

I've just found something else very odd.
I have downloaded VS10 from my discs to my wife's laptop in the hope I might get a result doing this on a different pc.
When I have tried to copy across an mpeg video I have just completed across to an Western Digital external hard drive I am told there is not enough memory. My external HD is 500gb with 422gb of free space.
I don't seem to be able to move any of the recent completed videos done on VSX2, getting the same response each time. I can, however copy over an earlier test video that I made, of 1/2gb, without any trouble.
I can also transfer my music files and picture files which are in excess of 6gb and 11gb respectively.
Has anybody any idea why these VSX2 video files cannot be copied over?

Thanks
Mark

In X2, when you go to Save As there will be a drop-down box where you can choose to save the project as a v10, v11 or X2 project. A v10 project can be opened in X2, but an X2 project can't be opened in v10, so you have to save it is a v10 project.

Thanks Jeff
I'll remember to do that in future.
Do you have any idea why I get the blank screen when trying to add chapters or why I should have received the Unspecified Error message I mentioned above?

Many thanks

I know you say you updated your DirectX, but this is from the Corel Knowledgebase. It certainly sounds like your problem.
After creating a video and starting the Create Disc step in Share... the Preview Window does not show your videos, or the controls below the preview window are grayed out and unusable. This can also cause problems with the viewing and editing of the DVD menus in the 2nd step.

Answer
This is generally an issue where the Microsoft Direct X components have not been fully updated to their latest version.

One can "Download the Latest Version of Directx" at the following link: http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Ab ... x10-a.aspx

If that link is not working, one can also visit: http://www.microsoft.com/directx to download the end user (non-professional) Direct X Components.

As of the beginning of January 2008, Windows Vista uses DirectX 10, and Windows XP uses DirectX 9, but the same download updates components for both versions.

Hi Guys
EUREKA !!

I've learned so much from you over the past couple of weeks, can't thank you enough. Thanks also for your patience.

Jeff, I went to the site you directed me to for DirectX and it was different from the one that I was linked to by Ken. Yours linked me to DirectX end-user runtime installer, file name: dxwebsetup.exe, whereas I had got my earlier downloads from DirectX End-user runtimes (August 2008), file name: directX_aug2008_redist.exe.

For a PC novice that had never downloaded this programme before they sound very similar but are, presumably, quite different. Your link worked perfectly and I am now happily burning better quality DVDs assisted by the wealth of knowledge gained from you and Ken through these threads.
Thank you both so much.

Cheers
Mark
