dvd plays on home unit, but not in Windows Media player

Post by bveloce1998 »

The dvd I make plays fine on the home stereo, but when I try to play it on the computer, I get a black screen with the audio playing in the background. If the dvd has more than one movie on it, it stays locked on the menu screen, with the audio playing in the background. I ask Ulead for help, they send me to microsoft, then microsoft sends me to Ulead....a vicious circle. Does anyone have a similar problem? thanks if you can help.

Windows media player does not have a built in codec for playing dvds. Now if you were to install Power DVD or Win DVD then you would be able to play dvds in Windows media player as it would use the codecs installed by one of those two programs.

Hi,

Could you relate the steps? Bitrate, type of project, anything?

Hi,

The point I'm driving at is how the file was encoded.

The image below shows how to access bitrates and audio encoding.

You might want to change the Project Settings for the disc to see it that helps.

If this is on Windows XP, I would try using Microsoft's Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility. This will show you which MPEG decoder(s) are installed, and if there are multiple decoders, it will let you choose which one WMP uses. By changing the default, you may be able to play the DVD in WMP.

And don't be concerned if it shows that something isn't MCE (Media Center Edition) compatible, that's for synchronization and DRM (Digital Rights Management) only, and doesn't affect the ability to decode and play DVDs.

I've tried changing the decoders, same results. I don't know what the properties of the dvd were, but there is 3.5 hours on it, at a lesser quality. I don't know how to find the properties on the already made disc. It plays fine on the home player, but not the pc, shouldn't it be the other way around? The ones that have just one movie on them, does work on the computer. Maybe wmp won't play extended dvd's? That doesn't make sense.
