Error - "The content of these files is unreadable"

I'm using Ulead VideoStudio with EasyCap. When I try to drag videos onto the film strip, I get this message:

"The content of these files is unreadable."

I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help?

Which version of Video Studio are you using? Was it one which came with the CapWiz device? I ask because CapWiz normally does not work with more recent versions of VS, and I am afraid this is common with a lot of capture devices, which seem to work only, or much better, with the software they come with. So we recommend that people capture with that software, and then open the capture files in Video Studio for editing.

That being said, you appear to have captured something, but we have no idea what it is. Can you right click on one of the capture files within Video Studio -- if you can even get it as far as the library window of Video Studio -- and copy down all of its properties here please.

I can play the clip, albeit with distorted sound. I just can't drag it onto the film strip. These are the properties of the file:

Thanks for the properties. But it is curious since they seem to be pretty standard uncompressed AVI. As you have seen, it creates enormously huge files -- your 11 second file taking 250MB!!

But the audio properties are for standard, high quality PCM, and that should certainly play on any Windows computer (and stand-alone DVD player) with no distortion.

When you say you can play the file though with distorted sound, where do you play it? In the library window? Or in another program? Have you tried playing it, for instance, in Windows Movie Maker? If it will play correctly in that, you could convert your video to DV format with no significant loss of quality, and edit that in VS.

You also haven't told us what you are using the EasyCap to capture from... Is it analogue source material e.g. from an old analogue video camera or VCR?

I'm using EasyCap to record PS3 gameplay. I can record fine, then play it back (with fuzzy sound), either in the library window or windows media player. I'm having trouble editing the files though - i.e. I want to take parts of certain files and combine them with parts of other files. I assume I do this via the film strip timeline thing which is where the problem lies.

Update: I've just downloaded Windows Movie Maker and, using that, can now drag the video onto the timeline. Hopefully I can just use this program instead as it looks to be very similar. Could you tell me how I'd convert the video to DV format though so I can try that as as well?

Only problem now is the distorted sound although that's not such a big issue.
