Videostudio X2 Pro - Cannot Author DVD's !

Post by skaeley »

Folks,
I have just purchased Videostudio X2 Pro having upgraded from Videostudio 11.5 (inc all patches).

I decided to install it on a clean copy of XP Pro SP 2, so that none of my other Ulead products would in any way interfere with it.

I decided to try something simple, I took some existing video footage encoded as an mpeg that I have used in the past to author a DVD.

1. Placed the clip on the timeline
2. Jumped to share and selected -> Create Disc
3. Selected DVD
4. The window pops up with my clip in the bottom left

The problem - all the buttons are greyed out, and I cannot view the clip in the window to play it back or in any way view it !

Going to add/edit chapters opens the associated window but I get the same problem, I cannot view or in any add chapters in the preview window.

If I skip the menu and go onto preview, the pressing play on the remote plays nothing, move onto burning a disk and it does seem to encode and create files.

Has anyone else seen this problem ?

I have installed my downloaded version of Videstudio X2 on another instance of XP with Videostudio 11.5 and it behaves exactly the same !

Help !

Regards,

Sanjay

Some preview problems are fixed by updating to the latest version of Microsoft DirectX.

I agree that it is most likely DirectX. The latest update patch is dated August 2008 and can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular -- and probably now also in X2 -- which appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview , 'building preview graph' and other problems in the burning module seem to be amongst them.

Note that DirectX is not included in the usual pattern of Windows automatic updates. It has to be done every so often by the user manually. So unless you have recently done this, you are probably still using the original, non-updated version of DirectX which came with your computer.

As for your workflow as described, you did no editing. So why did you insert the video in the Editing timeline? You could have opened the program and then immediately have chosen Share > Create Disc > DVD. The burning module would have opened and you have directly inserted your video in the burning 'timeline'. As it is, you think you have your video in the burning timeline. However, in fact you have the project file, consisting only of your video clip, in the burning module, and NOT the clip itself. And that too can sometimes cause problems for users.

Gentlemen,
Thank you very much, the latest Direct X install has fixed the problem.

I also agree on the workflow advice, I will in future go down the route you suggested.

I fell fowl of thinking that Direct X gets updated more frequently then it actually does, and I guess seeing that the problem didn't exist with Videostudio 11.5 I assumed the worse.

Again many thanks !

Regards,

Sanjay

P.S Still waiting for support to reply, it will be interesting to see what they think the problem is .....
