Pro X2 on Vista 64 bit?

I've been having some audio/video sync problems using Pro X2 trial with AVCHD (the problem is covered in another thread). I just noticed on the Corel website that the operating system requirement for Pro X2 lists Windows XP, Windows Media Center, Windows XP 64 bit, and Vista.

It does not list Vista 64 bit, which is what I am using. Maybe that is my problem? Is anyone using 64 bit Vista sucessfully, especially with AVCHD video?

I'm running VSx2Pro on 64 bit Vista with no problems but I am not using the same format video as you are as yet.

Is VisualStudio X2 Pro "officially" supported in 64-bit Vista? Corel doesn't make it clear in their documentation, indicating Vista only, not specifying 32-bit or 64-bit.

It is encouraging that at least one user is running it successfully on a 64-bit Vista system, but I'd like to know if it is officially supported.

Also, if it is compatible, meaning that it runs without conflicts, does it actually 'take advantage' of 64-bit capabilities?

Thanks.

I posted the question because I wondered the same thing as you. I did end up buying Pro X2. I have been using it for a couple months with Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have encountered no compatibility problems.

It is a 32-bit app and does not take advantage of Vista 64-bit capabilities. It runs in 32-bit compatibility mode.

I don't know whether it is "officially" supported by Corel. I e-mailed them before buying asking about the absence of Vista 64 from the list of operating systems, and got an answer that said it will run fine with Vista 64-bit, but it is a 32 bit app and won't take full advantage of 64 bit.

They have provided support for me on a couple problem reports, knowing that I was running it with Vista 64 (they ask which operating system you are using when you fill out a problem report).

Microsoft have enforced a policy that software companies cannot release a product with a "run on Vista" badge without it being usable in both 32 & 64 bit environments.

VSX2 is still a 32 bit program but because it can run in Vista 64 bit in x86 mode. The difference mainly is how much RAM can be addressed.

Same with drivers apparently...all drives for windows Vista are supposed to be compatable with both environments. (or a company must write for both). It's a condition of getting the code to write the drivers in the first place.

My fave things about VSx2 is it recognises multicore CPU's

Thanks for the responses.

I have a brand-new Q6600 QuadCore, 6gb RAM Vista 64-bit system, with nVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512mb VideoCard. I'm wanting to edit video from my Sony SR11 HD camcorder (AVCHD files). It would be ideal to hvae a video editor that is able to take advantage of all this hardware and software, but so far the only application I can see that does this is Sony Vegas Pro 8.1. But at $500+ this is huge overkill for my needs.

Sony's Vegas Movie Studio Platinum is better priced, but according to Sony is not supported for 64-bit systems (although some seem to run it without problem).

Any other experience with VSx2, or other video editors that are optimized for 64-bit Vista hardware/software?

Thanks.

to DLCPhoto: it is offtopic but you should also concentrate to choose software which is able to work with avchd files correctly...

Absolutely. That is why I lean toward the Sony product, since it is the same company that produces the SR11 and should work pretty transparently with its AVCHD files. If they officially supported 64-bit Vista, my decision would be much easier.

Corel's VSx2 lists AVCHD files for both import and export - does anybody have any real-world experience in terms of how well VSx2 does work with AVCHD files?

I uploaded a clip from my Sony SR-11, and a file created by Pro X2 from that clip (and which shows the transitions problem). I also uploaded a clip from a Canon HF100 that was provided by Efenstor, with a note that Canon users are experiencing this problem too.

Hopefully they can re-create the problem on their PC's, will agree that it is a program bug, and will refer it to the developers for a fix.

When I get a response from Corel, I will post what they said.
I received an e-mail from the gentleman from Corel support who has been handling my problem report about the "jerks" or "blips" caused by transtions between AVCHD clips.

He said he was able to recreate the problem with both clips I sent to him (a clip from my Sony SR-11 and a Canon HF100 clip provided by Efenstor.) He said he has referred the problem to Research and Development for further investigation. He then said, and I quote:

"They will investigate this issue and it might need to be resolved in an update pack release to correct the problem."

Thanks. Not too encouraging. Strange, though, how with any given product, some people seem to have no problems, while others have all kinds of issues. Probably a combination of the idiosyncracies of particular systems, user knowledge, user expectation and experience, and who knows what else.

I'll keep researching, since there's no clear winner yet (or at least at a price I'm willing to pay at this point).

I'm running X2 in Vista 64 without any issues yet. It has been rock solid for me so far. Then again, I don't edit AVCHD files though.

It seems you may be right. I thought there were some at the AVSForums who were successfully using VSx2 (on 64-bit Vista) with AVCHD files. Most I've found there also report problems. There was one poster there (Gris) who seems to be using it successfully. I've posted a question to him in that thread to see if he is also experiencing the "stutter" problem reported by others.

But, if VSx2 is a no-go, is anybody here successfully using VS11+ on 64-bit Vista to edit AVCHD files?

See Gris's post here:

VSx2 is apparently working ok for him on AVCHD files.

Hard to know (better hardware?) why it seems to work well for him, and not so well for many others.

thanks for link. I understand if customers could have bad system installation or not suitable hardware BUT problem was confirmed also by COREL :!: It is more than clear there are some bugs in videostudio while AVCHD editing
