Major problem loading & capturing AVI's

Hi
I cannot load or view Type 1 or Type 2 AVI's in VS10 or VS12 on my new machine under XP.
If I try to load a Type2 DV AVI file I get the error message "FILENAME is not accesible."
These are Type 2 AVI's I have successfully used on previous projects, captured with VS.
I can use the "Info" button in the Open Dialog and it shows all the file detail, but the file will not load.
If I try to capture from my DV using VS the program crashed and bombs out when I hit "Capture Video" (I can stop/play/rewind).

It *WAS* working a few weeks ago and had no problems, but it looks like something is broken and I can no longer view or capture AVI's.

I've tried reinstalling/uninstalling anything that I might think could conflict, including VS and my audio drivers. But short of reinstalling windows complete, I don't know what else to do.
It works fine on my notebook with XP BTW, but I need it working on my faster desktop.
NOTE: This problem is NOT specific to VS, it also happens in Windows Movie Maker and Nero, so seems like a common Windows related thing. Also, Media Player cannot play the Type 1 or Type2 AVI's (but my notebook can).

Any help appreciated.

Sounds more like your DV/AVI codec has become corrupted or accidentally deleted... Most likely, corrupted. The codec is common to all the programs you mentioned, and is installed as part of Windows... A couple of options: you could Google for a DV codec and try that. Or you could run your Windows disc in Repair mode...

You haven't by any chance recently installed a mega-codec pack? They often cause this type of conflict...

Thanks Ken, you're a legend, that did the trick!
Google bought up a Panasonic DV codec, downloaded that and installed it and it works a treat, I can now load and play AVI's in VS.
Unfortunately the Capture part still crashes, any further ideas?

I assume you are capturing via Firewire? Does capture crash in both VS and Movie Maker? If so, and you are using Firewire, then that suggests something could be wrong with your Firewire capture card, the firewire cable or, worse, the camera firewire jack... But it would be a matter of trial and error to work out which...

Yes, the crash happens in both programs.
Firewire control works fine in both programs, i.e. I have remote stop/start/rewind control. But once I start to capture both programs will crash. MM doesn't actually crash, just gives an error message. VS actually shuts down.

So it's not the firewire card, got to be a software/driver issue somewhere.
