X2Pro won't load and DirectShow error

Post by nosnoop »

I am having problem running X2 Pro (retail version, I have not installed the trial version at all). The splash screen would appear, after clicking Videostudio Editor, it would attempt to load. Then fragments of the Editor screen would appear (I can see the preview window and the tabs on top), and then it stops. Task Manager shows "Unresponding" and few seconds later, it would exit with no errors, nothing.

The scary thing is that after X2 Pro installation, my old VS10+ would also fail to load in exactly the same way!

My System:
XP Home SP3, Pentium 4 3.2GHz duo-core, 2GB RAM, DirectX 9.0c (with Aug 2008 update)

dxdiag showed an error in DirectShow - and it would crash and exit.
If I run dxdiag again, it would say:
"DxDiag has detected that a problem occured when accessing DirectShow, this might be caused by a problem that occured last time this program was used. Do you wish to skip DirectShow this time?"

If I click no and it accesses DirectShow, it would crash and exit.

After uninstallation of X2 Pro, everything went back to normal. VS10+ loads fine, and the dxdiag no longer showed a DirectShow error, and runs fine.

Could the DirectShow error responsible for the X2Pro load problem? What could be causing it?
I don't have any codec packs installed apart from ffdshow. So the X2Pro installation must have installed something which causes the problem.

I would appreciate any pointers.
BTW, I assumed the content pack and bonus pack are optional and should not affect VS loading if not installed, am I correct?

The bonus pack is optional, but the content pack is only optional in the sense that it contains a lot of the templates, samples etc which are part of the program. But, no, they are not integral to the actual operation of the program itself.

But apart from that, I am at a loss to know what is causing your problem. You are the first to report it, and there are quite a few XP users out there who have installed X2 without problem. (It would not be a problem for Vista users since DirectShow is not part of the Vista world as I understand it...)

I am afraid all I could suggest is the tried-and-true uninstall/reinstall routine. That, or totally uninstall VS10 first, then install X2. Though again there are users out there with various versions of VS on a sole computer, all still happily working, including with X@. So hopefully someone else will have a more constructive suggestion...

Perhaps your problem is ffdshow.
I have VSX2 installed on

Windows XP Pro SP3
Vista Home Premium SP1

Extra codecs I have installed are

I tried uninstalling ffdshow completely. I even re-downloaded the X2 Pro installation file, it still won't run after installation.

I would help if it at least gives me some errors or some clues. Now, I don't even know where to start. Anyways, I'll try contacting Corel Support, even though I never have much luck in support. Unless it is a known issue, otherwise, they would give standard response like uninstall various other programs, or a clean install of windows...
