I have Pinnacle Studio 12 and that version has the option to render your HD videos at 60fps in wmv format. How do I get that option in Corel X2? I have the media 9 encoders installed. Tried to do it by making my own template but it always defaults to 29fps even though I clicked on custom and typed in 60.

I don't think VS will allow that -- though if you find a way, please post back with it. I have just checked my own set-up but also can only find 25 fps as the maximum.

If you actually have a clip using 60, you could try the following. Go to Tools > Make Movie Manager, then in the dialogue box which appears, choose Add. A New dialogue box appears. It requires a name for the new template so give it one (e.g. HD_WMV_60). In the path box, browse to where you have your 60 fps clip stored, select it and press Open. The file path will appear in the dialogue box. Click OK to get out of it.

That should now contain a template with the requisite properties. Note a couple of things, however. You will need to leave the clip you used as the basis for the template stored where it was. And never try to edit that template as it will revert to default settings and you will have to do it all over again.

Let us know if that works too!

I found I had to download a different set of WMV Encoders.

Although 60 isn't in the drop down box I simply typed it in and it saved OK and then appeared in [Share] [Create Video]

Hmm. Just installed that encoder -- thanks. But when I went to Make Movie Template Manager, it would not accept my attempt to enter '50' (for PAL). So which box did you use?

EDIT: Just tried it using Share > Create Video File > Custom, but as with the above attempt, I keep getting 'Access is denied' messages when I attempt to save it as the template.

I got it to work!. Ok here's what I did.

Tools/Make Movie Template Manager

Clicked on New and named it WMV 720 60 for the profile name and selected WMV for the file format.

Named it WMV 720 60 again for the Template name.

Selected Ulead WMV 720p NTSC Standard Quality form the profile drop down list.

Click on customize.

Highlighted Ulead - WMV HD 720p NTSC standard quality and copy it.

Called it WMV 720 60 (or whatever you want)

Then edit WMV 720 60 (or the name that you just gave it)

In the target bit rate area, highlight Quality-based and then Edit.

Type in 60 for the frame rate field.

And that should be it!

Did a test and viola! WMV at 60fps.

Thanks Steve. I tried exactly as Cyber Chulo described, but got the access denied message.

Since when has WMV been considered an AVI file????!!!!

Your method also does not give high definition -- the fps may seem right, but the frame size is standard definition...

I was only attempting to answer the 60 f.p.s. issue but taking it one step further.....





I do not yet use High Definition so hopefully these settings are what you are looking for. I hope I have demonstrated that you can create a template with that screen size and f.p.s.

It worked perfectly, though I am still reeling from having a high definition clip in WMV format but using .avi as its extension!

I might also note that I did a test convert of HDV to the new format. It was only 10 seconds long, yet it took a couple of seconds short of 4 minutes to convert to the new format... So I don't think I would want to wait around to render a much longer video -- that would take around 24 minutes per minute of video!

I am also not sure why I cannot follow the more 'logical' route followed by Cyber Chulo... But I repeatedly get the Access Denied message... Ah well!

I've also tried and received the same access denied message Ken. I'm not sure why, but it may be attributed to the Permissions/authorizations set for those files.

Well, when I copy and rename the existing template, I get a message saying "The new profile cannot be created. Start the Encoder and try again".

If I try to edit the existing profile, following the steps you outline for the renamed profile, I get the Access denied message.

FWIW, on my desktop running XP Home, I can do this. I don't get those error messages Ken..

Ah well. At least I now have my hybrid WMV/AVI template in Vista!!

Suggestion:
When you make 50fps or 60fps (59.940fps) mpeg's, avc/h264 or wmv's they should be frame based when doubling the frame rate when the source is interlaced.

When your source is interlaced 25 / 29.97 and you double the framerate then each interlaced field becomes a frame when converting interlaced video to a true progressive video.

Windows Movie Maker 6 help section (under Vista) has a lot of information of how to make HD-WMV videos, links to the encoders and profile editors etc, where to put them on your system along with docs & technical information.

My opinion, the problem with explaining the "how to's" for making HD-WMV's interlaced or progressive video on a forum takes to many steps to explain how to make a profile, where to put it and then assign that profile, not to mention VS settings that are required to feed the WMV encoder with the correct information.

I suggest reading Windows Movie Maker 6 Help File, it's has a lot of information.
