Can anyone explain how to fix an over-exposed background on a photo? The subjects came out great, but there are brightly exposed areas around them that cannot be cropped out.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

No two pictures will be the same and so no single answer can exist.
Take a look at these samples - some are better than others.

It depends on how badly over exposed it is. Some pics can't really be fixed. You could try selecting the overexposed areas (I would try using the Magic Wand tool) and then playing with those areas using the "Brightness and Contrast" tools in the Adjust menu. I've had the best luck with the Brightness/Contrast tool and Levels tool. It may also be easier if you created a layer first and then worked on a layer and just changed opacity to get it the best you can.
Good luck
