black screen in editing tab

Hi,

I just installed Ulead VideoStudio 11.5 (+bonus cd) and i've experience a problem which I couldn't found in any other posts:

When I place a film in the timeline in the editing tab and press play, I only see a black screen, with sound! Strangely, after splitting the audio (the movie is in the videotrack, the audi in the voicetrack), the movie is displayed, but there is no sound.

I couldn't find any help on the internet. I also reinstalled Ulead VideoStudio and installed the newest codecs, but the problem stays.

I'm using Ulead VideoStudio 11.5 on Windows XP SP2. The camcorder is a JVC GR-D815. However, I don't think Windows and the camcorder has anything to do with: Windows Video Maker displays the recorded video with sound.

So, the problem is: in the Ulead editing tab, the video shows only black, not the video!

Any help is highly appreciated!

Regards,
Leonard

You may want to try updating to the latest Microsoft DirectX. Doing this seems to fix many preview issues.

Can you also confirm that the video you are having trouble with is in DV format from you mini DV camera? If so, is it using the Type 1 or Type 2 DV encoder? Even though VS should be able to handle both properly, for some people -- or their computers! -- VS seems to operate much better with Type 1. So try capturing some footage by changing to Type 1 using the Options icon on the Capture page.

Another thing. In File>Preferences, make sure your Instant Playback Method is set for Preview Screen.

Thanks, I followed all your advices:

I updated Microsoft DirectX and changed the settings to DV Type 1 (so yes, I can confirm that the video which I had troubles with was in DV format, mpeg format had the same problem).

These changes did not solve the problem of having a black video-screen.

The latest change (File>Preferences> Preview Screen) did solved the problem partially! For the whole project (there are several videos in the videotrack) the video-screen shows the video and there is sound. So far so good.

However, when I select 'Fragment' instead of 'project' in the video-screen, the video-screen is still black.

Did you change the settings to DV Type-1 after you had already captured? This will not have any affect on video that you have already captured as Type-2. You would need to recapture your video as DV Type-1.
