Win DVD 9 plus error " =4"

Post by MeeRKaT »

I have installed 9 plus on my laptop , it did a perfect install no errors
then I restarted , clicked on win dvd9 icon and a small window opens with a critical error sound , it is titled Corel Windvd and inside it has a diagonal cross in white on a red circular background, and to the right this message " =4"
I have searched the forum for as many error codes as I could find and so far the closest is "=38" but no answer
I would really like a meaning and solution to this problem as I am trying out a couple of laptop blu-ray R/W drives and so far can not watch or edit anything,
I am running a Sony Vaio FZ with an X9000 2.8 dual core , 2 meg ram and Nvidia 8400GT ,320Gig HD , on Vista 32
any ideas ?....anyone
thanks in advance for your help....

I have not yet had any response to my request for help , so I thought I would have another go at trying to solve this problem , I have stripped the hard drive of all except bacic programs , I have also changed the graphics card driver back to original , I know that this laptop should have had a basic version of Win DVD 8.0 when I bought it , but for some reason the shop I bought it from removed it , I have re installed Win DVD9+ and again no problem with the install ,however try to start it and the same error message pops up ( =4) , I have disconnected internet connection and still it will not start , I cannot call Corel during their working hours and as for having no e-mail support ( is that a code for blew up under the strain ? )
so what can I try next ....apart from a rivals program of course...?

I have installed my ESD version of Win DVD 9+ on my main computer,
and guess what ,it installed and activated and runs dvd`s but refuses
to run Blu-Ray....
so I have now bought my 3rd Blu ray drive this time a Blu Ray combo External laptop drive brand new ... still nothing...
as a last resort I have turned to Power DVD 7 a version bundled with an LG Drive ..it worked after an update but only on a couple of discs ,so
have now upgraded to version 8 Ultra and every disc has worked ..
how funny is that ...
correct
not at all..
I would still like Win Dvd to work after all it has cost me alot of money
so any ideas of why it does not work ? anyone ...like a challenge..?

Did you buy the Blue Ray Version of WinDVD 9?
There are 3 versions

WinDVD 9
WinDVD 9+
WinDVD 9+ Blue Ray.

Confusing I agree.

Thanks for that , I used the direct link from the website for the the Win DVD 9 + Blu-Ray version which said it was Blu Ray compatible it said
buy now for £59.00 clicked on that icon and I used PayPal , I have checked back and was not charged £59 but £39 so it look as if the link for "full with blu-ray" can give you the version without !!! now that is what I call confusing plus how am I supposed to know on the download
, I would like someone to try and use the same link I used ,you will see what I mean....

This program will still not run on my laptop , I have changed back to an internal dvd rewiter and even without a disk I still get that error message box with Corel Windvd as the title and =4 as the message.
I have uninstalled /re-installed ,still nothing , it is pointless getting the blu ray version if the plus version will not even start, it should not be the CPU (X9000 2.8ghz),I have 2Gig memory so that should be enough , but I think it could be related to the graphics card an 8400M GT , the specs say it has upto 830 meg available but when I checked the S.I. it is only showing 64meg VRAM and not the 256 meg recommended by the program , could this be the cause of the error ?
I have seen plenty of 8400M GT laptops with Blu Ray onboard , so could it be that Sony have scrimmped on the onboard memory on certain models and there are different versions of this chip , if any one has any ideas please let me know

Error Equals One

Post by DigitalData »

I'm having (almost) the same issue.

Downloaded WinDVD 9 trial (from softpedia). During install (over a clean installation of WinXP with SP3) the progress bar goes to 100% stating "Computing space requirements", at this point the Registry Editor window (REGEDT32.EXE) pops up, and I have to close this window three times manually (keeps popping up), otherwise the installation does not proceed (don't know whether this behavior is intended or not). After successful finishing the installation (it does not ask for reboot) clicking the WinDVD desktop icon results in a small (error) window showing up and saying "Corel WinDVD" and "=1".

I have checked the WinDVD.chm help file and to the best of my knowledge my machine meets all the requirements listed there.

Data of the machine (copied from Everest), maybe this gives someone a clue:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3
DirectX: 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)
CPU Type: Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz (24 x 100)
Motherboard Name: Asus P4S800 (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DDR DIMM, LAN)
Motherboard Chipset: SiS 648FX
System Memory: 1024 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type: Award Modular (06/08/04)
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra (256 MB)
Audio Adapter: Analog Devices AD1980 @ SiS 7012 Audio Device
Disk Drive: WDC WD800JB-00JJC0 (74 GB, IDE)
Disk Drive: WDC WD800JB-00JJC0 (74 GB, IDE)
Optical Drive: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A (DVD+R9:8x, DVD-R9:6x, DVD+RW:16x/8x, DVD-RW:16x/6x, DVD-ROM:16x, CD:48x/32x/48x DVD+RW/DVD-RW)
Optical Drive: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A (DVD+R9:8x, DVD-R9:6x, DVD+RW:16x/8x, DVD-RW:16x/6x, DVD-ROM:16x, CD:48x/32x/48x DVD+RW/DVD-RW)

By the way, installing QuickTime and RealPlayer as suggested by the installer (or rebooting, or upgrading to the latest graphics driver) does not help either (don't know if GoogleToolBar is required in order to get this to work though).

Fiddling Around

Post by DigitalData »

So far I have figured out deleting "WD09.dta" changes the error from "=1" to "=4". Since this file is apparently a key-file it seems as if these error numbers are security related somehow. But I have no idea what could be wrong with the security of a demo version (have tried it meanwhile on a different computer (no service pack at all), same result). Maybe this has something to do with the regional settings? DVD drive one is set to RC1, drive two is set to RC2, Windows is set to "United States". Shoud I set all regional options to "Taiwan" perhaps in order to get this to work?

Technical Support ?

Post by MeeRKaT »

I have just been in touch with Corel UK the version I bought 9+ will not run on my laptop , so I tested it on my p.c. it worked . I asked if they knew of a reason about the error and more importantly the cure , I was told .....wait for it....
It is a WINDOWS FAULT because of the version I am running , BULL....
It is the same version" Vista home premium service pack 1" that is on my P.C, the only difference is the serial numbers.

Another point worth mentioning , thay want to charge another £39 to upgrade from win dvd 9 plus to the Blu Ray version but if you have paid by Pay Pal it is impossible to upgrade .

I have uninstalled Win Dvd 9 + forever

Advice to others Try Power DVD first.... it works

Interesting

Post by DigitalData »

A very interesting thing: The DVD decoder of the demo version (it does not ask for a serial during installation) seems to work with Windows Media Player without any time limitation. I've watched a whole movie with date set to 2020 and oddly enough it keeps working. (Uninstalling WinDVD results in Media Player asking for a DVD decoder again.)

Conclusion: This DVD player is (for me) not working at all, the DVD decoder on the other hand is working even better than expected.
