VS 12 Multi Trim problem

Post by keithf »

I have just started looking at VS 12

I have imported file from my hard drive and tried to multi trim it. The file is produced by a Samsung Minikit camera (AVI).

I can select and can see the trimmed video in the Multi trim subscreen.
When I confirm the selection and the clips are added to the timeline of the project the first clip is ok but any subsequent are audio only.

I suspect a codec problem of some description as other files produced by a different camera are ok.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

Note that importing the same file into VS11.5 and multi trimming works just fine-interestingly enough I have to uninstall VS 12 to do this though

Can you please right click on one of the AVI files, either in the timeline or in the library pane, and copy ALL its properties here please. You see, there are a huge number of video formats which use the .avi extension, so we need to know exactly which one your Samsung uses...

Thanks. Yes the SEDG decoder is the problem. Very stupidly, in my opinion, Samsung rewrote part of the DivX code and made their own special codec which would only work with the software they supply with the camera. Essentially, what you have to do is go to this website and download the little freeware program called, appropriately enough, deSEDG!! You'll find it at http://overstimulate.com/projects/deSEDG

This will convert it into proper DivX, but of course you will need to make sure you have the DivX codec installed on your computer in order to be able to play it and edit it in VS. You can get a free version at divx.com

Hi,

I had a look at the desedg application-it looks as if it is a mac application-I am running vista.
If these files are working ok in 11.5 why wouldn't they in VS 12. I note that there is another thread about divx codecs and the fact that VS12 is running what appears to be an older version than what is currently available

 Sorry. I just did a quick search and did not look at the details.

It's just that in other forums, there have been a lot of users of other programs that complain about the proprietary nature of SEDG...

It may indeed have something to do with X2 so far not picking up the DivX 6 codec... but we are still working on that one...

Ken,
If it helps, I have Divx 6 retail installed.
Under the \Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 12\ directory
I renamed the DivX_ul.dll to DivX_ul.dll_VS12_Distro
This way VS12 doesn't see & use it's own divx distributed file.

I can now use my Retail version of Divx 6 in VS12_X2 Pro to make Movie Templates or export via "Share -> Custom etc"
This is using XP Home 32bit, the file may be in another location if running XP64 bit or Vista64 bit.
But try renaming the DivX_ul.dll file that's distributed with VS12 so VS12 doesn't use it and uses the retail version.

Mine shows up as Divx 6.8.4 Codec (4 Logical CPU's)

etech -- Thanks!! That worked!! Mind you, it still doesn't explain why VS11.5+ shows both its own install of DivX (same version 5.1.1) AND the latest version of DivX Pro (6.8.4) whereas X2 only shows the ancient version...

It also means that users who need to use the old version of the codec to burn a DivX CD which will play on the DivX rated stand-alone players will have to use an older version of VS... But that doesn't affect me so I am happy enough!!

keithf -- you might want to try that too and see if the new version of DivX can in fact handle your SEDG files in X2.

Well done and thank you for finding the cure. I had just re-installed DivX 6 because it didn't show up in 12. I will copy your post and make it a sticky.

Thank you gentlemen this fixed the issue for me.

Is there a bug notification process from this forum-I guess you would call this a bug?

I certainly would since there is absolutely no logical reason to disable the latest version (especially when it worked in VS11.5+) and substitute only a positively ancient version of the same codec, regardless of whether or not some older stand-alone DVD players can only play DivX discs which use that ancient codec...
