Cannot open avi files
Cannot open avi files
I have the old pro 6. version. My capture is from cam. on fi-wire to ms 1394 input. It has been going just fine untill I tried to capture through a usb plug from a new cam. I can no longer access any video files to do editing. Can anyone help me out.
All the answers are to be found in your cam specs.
Your new cam is totally different to your old one and has no i.link (IEEE 1394) connection and no means of connecting to your computer except via the DVD disk. You will certainly never generate an AVI file from it, because the DVD is recorded in a modified MPEG-2 format with VOB files. If my memory serves me well, MSP6 does not capture VOB files and is flaky with MPEG-2 (read the warning on p. 20 of your manual). After all, your software is over 8 years old; do you really expect it to be able to cope with more modern formats?
Your real answer is time to update. Have your thought about the brand new VideoStudio X2 Pro? It is not expensive and will handle both cameras. A warning: you may find that mixing inputs from both cams is not satisfactory as the different formats will look different.

But I have a lot of captured video on file that I need to edit so I would be most greatful if you could tell me what settings may have been changed and how to change them back so I can use the video on file with ulead v.6.
In principle, your old avi files should not have changed. Can you play them back in WMP? If so, they should still be OK. It may be that your attempts to download from your new camera may have corrupted a file in MSP. In this case, try a complete uninstall/reinstall of MSP.

I've no idea why you're not able to edit your old camera's DV AVI files. The only reasonable way to work with the new camera without and upgrade is to convert the MPEG to an AVI before editing using one of the many free tools out there such as virtualdub.
Ideally, you need to convert it to uncompressed AVI or HuffYUV AVI but if you're still using an old editor, there's a possibility you're also using an old computer, and don't have the space or the throughput to copy with these formats.
Edit: Scratch that last paragraph - you should have plenty of grunt for uncompressed video with your machine.

Thanks for the help. I will do the uninstall and reinstall and let you know how if that works.Devil wrote:In principle, your old avi files should not have changed. Can you play them back in WMP? Devil has advised me to uninstall and reinstall my mps6 and see how that goes.
