I¡¦ve owned and used VideoStudio since version 3 and find it to be quite versatile, especially since version 10. I¡¦m a sucker for ¡§new and improved¡¨ so even though I felt version X2 was an incremental upgrade from 11.5 Plus, I purchased it anyway. I own a Sony HD video camera (HDV-A1U), but do not own a Blueray player or burner. I did purchase an HD-DVD player and was intrigued that HD-DVD content could be burned using V11.5 onto a standard DVD disk and played in that player, only to be disappointed that HD-DVD died. I do keep the copy of 11.5 around in case I want to explore the HD-DVD thing.
I¡¦ve also got a copy of MediaStudio Pro 8 and used that since version 6, but since moving to Vista I was unable to use it. I have since returned to using XP Pro, but have not reinstalled MSP8. I have been using VSProX2 instead and have refrained the temptation to go back to MSP8 since it will no longer be supported (another disappointment).
I have tried other brands of video editors and even came very close to getting Sony Vegas Pro 8, but after using the trial version of that I decided that it was just too complicated for the video editing I do (mostly web stuff and short informational pieces).
Anyway, as I¡¦m using VSProX2, there are a few things that I would like to see improved in the next version. Some of them have already been mentioned, but I feel that if I also mention them here, then maybe the engineers at Corel will take notice. Here is my Top 10 improvement list for VideoStudio Pro X3:
#1 ¡V An interface that can be resized smaller than the full screen.
This has been one of my pet-peeves from the beginning and is now more important than ever. With screen sizes at 17¡¨+ there is no reason that the interface needs to always be at full screen. There are times I would like to have another app going while capturing and while I can minimize VS, there¡¦s plenty of screen real estate that I could reduce the interface and have another app or two up and running next to VS.
#2 ¡V MORE AUDIO TRACKS!
This one has been mentioned several times, but two additional audio tracks (aside from the embedded audio stream in the video itself) are not enough. I use the narration track and music track, but then there is no track for effects (button clicks, swooshes, etc.) All a person needs is two more, but the more the merrier.
#3 ¡V Tabbed interface for VIDEO/COLOR/IMAGE, etc. instead of the drop-down menu
This should be a simple one. I usually add a color at the beginning and end and sometimes in the middle. Using the drop down takes extra clicks and a tabbed interface here (similar to the top tabbed one) would make it much faster to use.
#4 ¡V The ability to change thumbnail sizes for each individual area AND the ability to see details instead of thumbnails
For example, it would be nice in the video library if the thumbnails could be large, but in the colors library the thumbnails could be smaller without affecting the size of the video thumbnails; same with images and audio. In the audio library it would be nice if just details could be shown (similar to what Windows Explorer shows with file name, extension, audio length, date, etc.)
#5 ¡V Jog Dial under the video preview window with audio preview
It is in the Single Clip Trim window, but I¡¦d like to see it in the clip preview window as well. Plus, in MSP8 when I used the jog dial I was able to hear the audio. Sometimes that came in handy when trying to align clips or sound effects.
#6 ¡V Separate Effects Track
Adding an effect only works on the first track. I may not have found it yet, but the additional tracks don¡¦t get the effects and sometimes you want to transition from one track to another with an effect.
#7 ¡V The ability to be able to customize an effect and save that customization as a new effect
This one is pretty much self-explanatory.
#8 ¡V More Audio Tools
Heck, Audacity is open-source. Why not allow it to plug-in or have an Audacity audio tab so that you can fine-tune the audio right from within VS!
#9 ¡V A Built-in Notes Area
There are times when adding notes to a project or better yet to VS itself to remind yourself how you created a certain transition, how you aligned a certain audio track or whatever. Even if it was a pop-up window that you can easily add a note to for future reference would be nice. I¡¦ve had to reopen projects and wait for them to load to remember what particular effect settings I had because I wanted to duplicate them for another project or another video that matches the first one.
#10 ¡V Multi-Camera Editing
The ability to edit from up to 4 different cameras would be nice. It¡¦s available in Media Chance¡¦s EditStudio 6 (
http://www.mediachance.com/video/index.html) and looks very intriguing. Being able to sync and edit video from up to 4 cameras would put VS over the top!
Corel, if you want to OWN the novice to semi-pro video editing segment and even dip a little into Adobe¡¦s Premier pocket, I urge you to add all of these features, plus some of the others that have been posted here. You¡¦re probably well into the development stage, but I¡¦d gladly wait longer to get these improvements.
