Is it possible to split the video screen to show two videos?
I want to split my video screen and show two videos side by side. Any one know if this is possible with Video Studio 9?

yes very easily, - - - put one video in the top track of the timeline - put the other in the overlay track. Click on the one in the overlay track and then in the preview screen use the YELLOW boxes to pull the overlay picture to fit the preview window. Next hover your mouse cursor anywhere in the preview screen - left click and slide the video half off the screen (left or right - your choice) - now play PROJECT .
Remember though you will not be able to see all your picture for each video - each half will only be showing half a picture.

start with a blank timeline, put one of your chosen clips onto the overlay track, resize the clip and place it in the desired position. go to share and create this as a video file.
open a new blank timeline, place the videofile you just created onto the video track, place your other chosen clip on the overlay track, resize the clip and position it where you want it.
this will give you two resized clips on the same screen without losing any of the image.
this is a personal favourite of mine and you can do this as many times as you like and create multiple images on screen, time consuming but worth it for the stylish look!!
it is easier to do on higher end editing software that allows images to be resized and repositioned on any video track but this gives the same result!!

duffgnr - surely your method will not give a split screen - it must just give two small boxes on the screen both showing a video with a lot of blank space around them - if that is satisfactory then why not just use one video full screen from the top track and have the one in the overlay track playing in a box - no additional file creation required that way .

the size of each clip can be whatever size you desire, on could be larger than the other or both the same size.
try it out and you'll see you can come up with some very interesting compositions.
this technique has been used successfully in texts ranging from the spoof sci fi movie starship troopers to the tv series 24. the movie, the boston strangler makes extensive use of this technique years before non-linear editing was thought of.
this method of multi imaging is even finding its way into daytime tv and lifestyle shows.
give it a whirl!

Yes Mikes pictures show very clearly what I meant - if you keep the aspect ratio of each video correct you get a lot of black screen as in the top picture, or you can crop the videos as in Mikes second picture to give less black space, my method does not distort the aspect ratio at all - all though I must concede you can only see half of each video onscreen - but this would allow you to have two people talking 'nose to nose' - a format which here in England at least has become known as the "Smith and Jones" effect from a quite successful comedy series shown on TV a few years back.MikeGunter wrote:For two clips to maintain aspect ratio and be in the same frame, then there has to be negative space:
