I wish to create a high definition DivX video file, which is simple enough following the C.J.Hunter tutorial.
I go to SHARE > CREATE VIDEO FILE > CUSTOM > SAVE AS TYPE MICROSOFT AVI FILES > OPTIONS > AVI TAB.
The COMPRESSION drop down box should then list all the possible codecs, including DivX, but there are only three - DV type 1, DV type 2 and Mpeg.
This is on my Quad Core running Vista which I use for video editing.
DivX is installed on the machine.
On my other computer, which runs XP, the same procedure reveals fifteen different codecs to choose from, including DivX.
Admittedly, I have a lot more applications on the XP machine, so I would expect to see more there.
But why is VS 11.5plus not recognising the available codecs on the Vista run computer? Is there something I don't know about in Vista set-up?
Obviously, I want to use the powerful system for my HD editing.
Any ideas?

VS should see the DivX codec on Vista. I just double-checked on my system, and it's there..

You might try reinstalling DivX to see if VS will then see it. Or if you haven't updated DivX recently you might just try that. However if you have any DivX Templates (not VS) be sure to back them up first. As a member had advised the current update looses those templates.

Like Vidoman, my Vista set-up with VS11.5+ also shows my DivX (6.6.1) in the drop-down menu you mention. I did nothing special. As with previous versions, it also shows a variety of other codecs, and I installed the DivX one in the usual way. It also, when selected, allows me to choose the HD profile when I press the Configure button.

Did you reboot after installing the DivX codec?

Please tell me where to find the necessary divx codecs and how to install them to use them with VS.
Are they free?

DivX is a commercial product, with two versions of the codec, available on divx.com. There is a Pro version you have to pay for, and a free 'community' version. You download and install it as you would any other program. It takes care of itself. And next time, usually after rebooting your computer, VS should automatically detect it.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled DivX several times on the Vista machine, and restarted each time, but still no luck.
But maybe this is the reason - the quad core which I use just for video editing is not connected to the internet. So I transferred the .exe program by memory stick from the XP machine.
If this is the reason, then it poses a problem, because I was going to invest in the Pro version to get the higher performance codec, but I want it for the non-internet system.
Can anyone shed any light on this theory?

There is no reason why the downloaded version, either community or Pro, should not work. As far as I am aware, DivX does not call home before installing, so lack of internet connection on your main computer is not the reason. But I can't think what is!

It's a mystery.
I'ts just niggly when you can't see why something's not happening!
However, if I buy the DivX Pro version it comes with a DivX converter application, so I would be able to save my project as an Mpeg video file, and render it to DivX that way.
I've downloaded a trial version of the converter, so I'll see how that works.

Sue, I don't know if this directly applies to you but I read a thread somewhere, possibly on another board, where the user was having the same problem.
It turned out there was a DivX update needed to correct the issue. Might be worth a try at the DivX site.

I do have the latest DivX installed.
I think the update you mantion was concerning Microsoft DirectX.

However, both Ken Berry and Vidoman are able to access the DivX codec on their Vista systems.

I'm still wondering if the DirectX version I have is anything to do with it - My Vista machine, bought in Feb 2008 came with Version 10 installed, and I've had no updates since, as it's not connected to the internet.

I've seen on another forum that DirectX Runtime Feb 2006 can fix certain functions, but I'd have to download it on to my XP machine, and transfer it to the Vista one. I don't know how big the application is and whether it is executable, but I have an 8gb memory stick.

Anyone know about this?

I see that post is by our old and absent friend J_Hunter. However, he seems only to be talking about VS11+, as opposed to VS11.5+ (i.e. as updated with the 6 November 2007 update patch and the 8 November Power Pack). I simply can't recall what the non-updated version of VS11+ could manage, and in fact I was not into high definition when I only had that version installed.

Indeed, it might even have been a verifiable bug as John Hunter claims. But all I can say is that VS11.5+ definitely allows much more than high definition mpeg-2 (i.e. HDV format). I also have the choice of converting to high definition WMV, DivX and of course mpeg-4, better known as AVCHD. Now the latter was definitely not possible under VS11 or 11+. But as I say, I don't know about DivX or WMV in that version. But I defintely have those options in VS11.5+.

Sue, sorry but my last post crossed with yours. Regarding DirectX updates -- they are not part of the regular automatic Windows updates. So you definitely have an older version of DirectX 10 if you have not manually updated it, which I take it you have not.

And yes, there will be no trouble using another computer to download it from the DirectX site. Size is not an issue either. It will fit swimmingly on your USB stick!!

The current update is dated August 2008 and it applies to both XP (DirectX 9.0c) and Vista (DirectX 10). The number of DirectX's main application will not change but you will see a new version number if you use dxdiag. Hope it works. Let us know.
