DivX file encoding

I went to the Microsoft DirectX download page, but I'm confused as to which I need. The other thing is that once installed, it can't be uninstalled.

These are the choices and download times at 256kps;

And I still can't really see how DirectX can affect what options VS picks up.

I'm asking myself "Is it worth it?"
As I said before, if I render my chapters into one Mpeg HD Video file, which I'll need eventually when we all succumb to Blueray, then I can create a DivX version in the DivX converter software, to fit on to a regular DVD. (My DVD Player reads DivX and upscales to 1080p which hopefully will give a better picture than a basic downconvert.)

Well it is totally up to you. But an upgrade of your DirectX is not going to hurt anything and may improve things. With recent updates to both XP and Vista, things have gotten out of whack with some programs, and that definitely includes VS.

That re-assured me that I would download the right application, which I have now done.

I'm returning to this thread, as I said I'd report back when I'd installed the Directx update on my Vista machine. I also tried the repair option for VS.
No luck - VS 11.5plus still only recognises three codecs ;
DV type 1
DV type 2
MPEG compressor
Anyway, I'm going to concentrate on finishing my film for the moment, then I'll re-visit the problem later.

Sue, you have the same VS11.5 and DivX bug I have and here is the temp fix below. I gave up on finding a permanet fix for this problem
from Corel or DivX as have others. Everytime you do a capture this will
happen to you. But I don't mind doing this fix each time because the software is still worth it.

WorBry: I had a problem like this myself along with one other form member where all of our codecs disappeared and our first fix would to be reinstall Vista to fix it. After doing this I had all of my Video codecs back. The last time I used Studio 11.5+ the problem came back.

The XP reg location is also in Vista, This reg location in windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit is.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DRIVERS32]

you will find a entry just called ( vidc.uldx ) with no quotes or equal sign and no values. I tryed deleting this valve and it immediately restored all the codecs to my following software, VS11.5+, Widows Medis Player, VirtualDub and now all codecs show up under Gspot.exe without rebooting.

When I get a chance I will try capturing something with VS11.5 to see if
it is the culprit causing the disappearing codecs.

Maybe we should move this fix to a permanent place???

Read this thread because VS in many versions will use it's own distributed codec. So you simply want to disable the ulead divx codec. Then it will use the systems Divx codec

After you rename the divx____ DLL's in VS then re-install Divx.

IF your running Vista 64, Divx does not work, divx 6 is written only for Vista 32 bit.

I had the exact problem. I tried loading and reloading the latest version of divx codec but no help. I had the demo trial version of corel photoshop x2 and videostudio on my computer and it worked fine, so I knew there was divx as an avi dropdown choice since I had used it, yet when I uninstalled the trial versions and installed the store-bought videostudio, the avi compression dropdown menu only had 3 choices.

I emailed corel with three different questions that I had, and must say their email support is quite lacking, since their answer in each case was that I had to call support for my type question.

In any event, I found that repairing on reinstalling videostudio x2 fixed the problem, and now I have all choices in my avi dropdown.

I use UVS 11.5 with Divx Codec 6.8.5. (2 Logical CPUs) Earlier, I managed already to encode several 5-15 minute portions of an UVS project into Divx files using not the entire project, but the preview range. One month later using similar settings (two-pass encoding, etc) the output file has no video only audio, accordingly the file size is very small to what targeted, i.e. only the audio has been encoded, (Data track under General tab is, of course, Audio and Video) several attempts were unsuccessful. I put the question to Divx Support team and received the answer: ivX codec 6 may not be completely supported in Ulead. Try outputting to a format such as mpeg-2 and then converting that file using DivX Converter 7.?
So I prepared a DV-AVI output file (to avoid double encoding) and then used Divx Converter to convert into Divx, which method was successful. Simply, I dont understand why the same method I applied earlier does not work two months later. The suggested method is longer, more HDD capacity required, less options etc.
Similarly, Xvid MPEG-4 codec also appears int he list of compression codecs in my UVS 11.5. With Xvid MPEG-4 codec I have never managed to encode files under UVS projects not only now, but also earlier: the output file was always black, no video, just audio.

Can anyone help me?

At the moment the only thing that I can add is that I've never had that sort of issue with that DivX codec. Since you were able to at one time, and now not, it would suggest a change somewhere has caused this problem. What that may be is anyone's guess. There is a newer update to DirectX, dated March 2009. You might Go HERE and download the latest MS Direct-X.

You might also try reinstalling your DivX, not saying that it is corrupt, but there may be something that VS lost, or is no longer using properly, and the reinstall might correct it.

There is a newer release for DivX, 7.0, however I've chose not to upgrade, since it appears to be for the High-def stuff, which I don't use..

Thanks for the prompt reply!. I have already downloaded the DirectX 2009 March, but that did not help. As suggested, I try to reinstall Divx: since my last successful Divx encoding I have downloaded Ashampoo Magical Optimizer to clean-up unnecessary staff, the operation of which might have deleted something needed for Divx. Or else, do you think I should reinstall UVS 11.5 as well?

Before trying a repair/re-install of VideoStudio, next thing to try is to download and install the latest version of DirectX.

I downloaded DierctX March 2009, re-installed UVS 11.5 as well as DivX 7 and still the problem exists. It seems to me that encoding is successful only when one-pass encoding is selected. No video output when either quality based one-pass encoding or multi-pass encoding is used. Under one-pass encoding file-size is difficult to be fixed, and quality is obviously poorer. Smilarly, Xvid encoding is OK when single pass is selected. What can make multi-(two)-pass encoding lose its video output?

Just in case something got messed up try my method of repairing VideoStudio it should preserve all of your settings and projects.

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 12
Rename this to
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 12X

2. Navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0
Rename this to
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0X

NOTE: Substitute your "Windows" User name for Stephen

3. Install VideoStudio using your set up discs.
(This will recreate the above directories)

4. Rename the (New) folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0
to become
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0Y

5. Rename your original folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0X
to
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0

Hopefully VideoStudio should now be "Fixed".
Once satisfied that everything is working correctly you can delete the folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0Y
and
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 12X
