Weird!!
This happened to me on my first five or six attempts to install Ulead 10, after wiping the Registry each time and trying a fresh install the last time it worked.
I am an artist, use Ulead all day to, running XP SP2 also. I do have an ocassional crash, sends a BUG report to Microsoft, but Ulead always recovers, I reboot and get back to work. Have a gig of mem, but get Insufficient Mem Errors all the time. It is Ulead. My other graphic programs don't have the problem.
You need tech support big-time, but that is very difficult to get. You could spend months sending e-mails back and forth.
I use a Registry Tracker to solve most of my problems between XP and apps, but you have to know how to use the software and what to look for, takes a lot of time to diagnose.
If you are desperate here is where you can get the free software:
Regmon for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2K/XP
Copyright (C) 1996-2002 Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell
Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com
Read the instructions and switches carefully.
I later found two Registry keys that had been left over from an errant program or Virus. I used Microsoft's cleaner and it got rid of the keys, and now everything works fine.

After a Good Nights Sleep I have a few more rememberances about Ulead.
Two Major problems with Ulead:
One; Each time I Open Ulead it would crash, quickly or after a few minutes.
The Problem: Under File, Preferences, Catagories, PhotoImpact, UNCHECK the "Check Ulead"s Web site every (0) days. If left Checked my system will craash everytime Ulead Is OPENED.
Two; My Registry problems casued the Ulead Product Key to garble, causing Ulead to eventually crash. I had to clean the Registry of all Ulead entries, then Boot to Safe Mode and Reinstall a fresh copy of Ulead. The problem stopped. (Don't try this if you have a USB mouse.)
That's all I got folks!!

Cleaning the resgistry won't help unless - as mentioned above - there was something in it that interfered from previous attacks, viruses or something that disrupted a DLL, corrupted a file, etc.
I do have some news which I will verify and update this thread with. Note the topic was the ABNORMAL TERMINATION (c++ runtime error) condition .... not necessarily opening and crashing.
The topic that began this thread had to do with those who CANNOT run the app at all. In this case: app runs fine... and then suddenly STOPS working and will not start.
Much has to do with the msjava.dll file that MS is NO LONGER distributing nor supporting. msjava.dll is needed by PI to run. MS says ... well guess what software companies? msjava.dll will no longer be distributable nor installed on pc's. Many companies have used the past year's warnings from MS to tackle this issue.
The initial problem in this thread will hit more users over time. I have a brief summary I will post here soon that discusses this in more detail.

I beg to differ, MUMS computer ran the software for a time before crashing.
Windows stopped supporting Msjava.dll because it was a major source of aggrevation and caused many crashes, I can tell you this from experience. Many AOL users had major problems with the DLL and Video Driver compatibility. Many were terminated frequently while attempting to get Online or while Online.
As I mentioned before my problem stemmed from a Bad Install to begin with. I found that Ulead did not copy correctly to the Hard Drive and hacked the Registry incorrectly while attempting to validate my Product Key, which all together caused my problem. So I am not talking from a viewpoint of. I installed and it worked then crashed, didn't happen in the beginning. After I got Ulead PI10 installed than I had many additional problems which I solved by other diagnostic means.
After manually Hacking the Registry, I still was not able to get rid of the Hidden Key. It took a Registry Cleaner to finally dispose of the Bad Code. Microssoft uses Regclean, Norton has a version, almost any Utilities Program has a Registry cleaner. I am not saying this is someones final solution, but it was mine. I know that manually hacking the Registry may not clean out all of the keys placed there by Ulead, as Ulead will combine their keys with others, and if you delete the Ulead Key you may take out part of the Shell or another program. As a once DOS programmer I am comfortable hacking the Registry, but I don't suggest anyone else try, unless experienced. Therefore a Registry Cleaner is the safe way to go, as it will find usless and no longer used code from errant programs.
According to Tech Support, you won't find the Dll in question on your computer, and PI XL and 10 don't need it.
There are only a few reasons a program won't install, A Bad Disc, A Bad Burner, Corrupted Code on the Disc, or Corrupted software on your computer. The Not-so-obvious is an Overclocked CPU, an AMD CPU, Bad Mem, a compressed drive, a strong Firewall, or Anti-Virus, Spam Blocker, etc. Microsoft now says their Speech Engine can be a major source of install and crash problems.
Hey this is what a Forum is for thrashing out ideas and ways to solve problems. Some may get you into deeper trouble but others may get you out of serious trouble. It is your choice after-all.
If nothing else works then it is the laborius Tech Support routine! I wouldn't count on Java being your problem.

Many registry cleaners will wipe out way too much unless you really know what you're doing. And yes...it isn't for someone who isn't comfortable with it and experienced.
I too have been developing since the days of DOS, so you make good points.
However, Tech Support absolutely insisted that you need the DLL. I disagreed, yet they told me PI10 and XL needs it. Just repeating what they told me. I was failing without it and working fine with it. Dependency Walker said it was missing - and although that is never the make all, break all ...... without the DLL, I had problems. However, I am sure it was somehow tied to something else, somewhere in the registry.
But in all honesty .... tech support is as pathetic as most of em out there. They talk up a good tech storm until they realize you know more than they do. then their hands are tied and you get passed to escalation ---- who by the way ---- you never hear back from !!!

YES! A Registry Cleaner can be Dangerous! However, after you run the Cleaner you can Edit the Deleted REG file and keep or get rid of what you don't need. Then click on the REG key and it will reinstall what you didn't want deleted. Done this many times, create a Resotre Point before tying this.
I think we should all band together and Burn out Ulead Disc's in front of Corporate Headquarters once and for all!! Maybe TECH Support would get the Point!
I agree about Tech support, if you get the "one" who reads diagnostics from their Computer, your in for a long haul. It is very Rare to get a Tech with the experience of an Engineer, a person who says, "Yeah I know what your talking about, here is what you do to solve the probelm."
Microsoft says, "It is only going to get @&^%$." I had to encrypt the last word, I can't afford a lawyer.

SYMPTOMS
Internet Explorer or other browsers installed onto Windows XP, may halt or shut down, when browsing a site that uses Java and or Microsoft Java Virtual Machine
Back to the top
CAUSE
The most common cause is that multiple java installations are conflicting by trying to execute at the same time, or have mixed installations from Microsoft and/or Sun Microsystems
Back to the top
RESOLUTION
NOTE: Step 2 of the resolution requires the use of Regedit, if you don’t feel comfortable using Regedit, Please do not proceed with the uninstall process, when used as improperly the changes made to your registry could render your system unbootable.
The only resolution is to uninstall Microsoft Java Virtual Machine and not use it, or install Suns Java plug-in or distribution of Java
Step 1) Click on the Start menu and choose Run.
Enter the following command including the spaces,
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
You will be prompted whether to go ahead with the uninstall or to cancel it, choose yes to uninstall
Your system will reboot, proceed to step 2.
NOTE: Step 2 requires use of Regedit, if you don’t feel comfortable using Regedit or have never used Regedit before, it is not recommended that you do so as it may render your system unbootable
Step 2)
Remove the following directories; only after Step 1 has been fully completed
the \%systemroot%\java directory, usually c:\windows\java
the .pnf file \%systemroot%\inf\java.pnf
and from \%systemroot%\system32 the following 2 exe files
\%systemroot%\system32\jview.exe
\%systemroot%\system32\wjview.exe
usually c:\windows is \%systemroot%; Although this is not always true.
The following registry keys must be removed using Regedit
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry sub-key
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry sub-key
MORE INFORMATION
Only use this specific method to uninstall MS Java Virtual Machine from Windows XP Professional, Media or Home Editions
Suns Microsystems Java is available for download at the following location - http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html
You can get the Microsoft VM from Microsoft, they are pulling the VM as it was also used by Spyware, Adware, and so on.
If you think the msjava.dll is needed to Install Ulead, you can get the software from Microsoft or many other Web sites on the Internet, but be warned it has been pulled from the XP Family. Don't try to put the DLL in the System32 Folder, it won't work without the correct Registry Keys installed. You need the whole software package.
To locate and download the latest version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine, please visit the following Microsoft World Wide Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/java
This page contains information about the latest version of the Microsoft Java VM. When you are ready to download and install the VM, follow these steps: 1. Installation prerequisite for Microsoft Windows NT users: you must install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later, prior to installing the Microsoft VM on x86 or Compaq DIGITAL Alpha architectures.
2. If you have run any Java applets in the current browser session, quit and restart the browser. Return to the download page to continue with the download procedure.
3. Select the self-extracting file that you want to download.
4. When prompted, save the file to your hard disk.
5. Double-click the downloaded file on your hard disk, and follow the instructions that appear.
Good Luck!

After another good nights sleep:
I am Game, k9ruby if you want to start all over! I will Play Tech Engineer and go through the motions, just as if I worked for Ulead.
I assume you are the Administrator and have the Correct Privilege to Install Ulead, and you are not Networking, also have Printing and File Sharing turned off. You are not working with a compressed drive, or have any Overlay Software Installed on your Hard Drive. Norton Utilities hasn’t Locked your Drive, you haven’t Write-protected your Hard Drive. All Firewall and Anti-Virus software are turned off, Including the Security features Microsoft has included with SP 2.
No 1—Is your copy legal? You say You bought it from Amazon, “from Amazon,” or An Associated Partner? New or Used? Is the Software Full or an Upgrade? If an Upgrade, is your previous software the correct Version for the Upgrade? It does matter!
No 2—Check on the Disc. Is your Burner recent, and do you have the most up to date Firmware? Does the Burner Recognize the Book Media Type, is the Disc Type compatible with your Burner Firmware? Check the Burner Manufacturers Web site for this bit of info.
A Quick Check tells if the Disc is Bad or maybe corrupt. Place the Disc in the Burner, Hold down the Shift Key, three seconds, and then off for two seconds, repeat this process until the Disc File Structure loads in Explorer. Or if you know how turn off AutoRun temporarily.
If the File structure on the Ulead Disc takes more than 30 seconds to load in Explorer or stalls, you have a Bad Disc. Go through the Ulead Disc Folder by Folder, again if the file structure stalls while loading or takes more than 30 seconds to load, you have a Bad Folder, the same goes for any file you check, ergo Bad Disc. It happens.
Clean off the Disc with Denatured alcohol, very carefully with a clean and very soft rag, don’t use a paper towel. If the Disc Still won’t load, try another software Disc and try to load that disc, if it also will not load, then do the following: Clean the CD/DVD Disc with denatured alcohol and a very soft rag, don’t use a paper towel. If the Disc still will not load properly you may have a coated Laser Lens, that requires the factory, don’t use a Disc Cleaner or any other means, Don’t try compressed air, or you will damage small parts or the Laser Lens.
Another method of messing with the Book Type; Reboot the computer, once in the OS, turn off all programs on the Start Bar and Quick Launch, especially graphic adapter software and speech engine. Bring Up Windows Explorer. Place any software program CD/DVD Disc in the Burner, one you know that loads. If a software install Dialog Box comes up, just leave it. Now remove the Disc, do not use the Menu Eject, use the Eject Button on the Burner. Now insert in the Ulead Disc, use the Shift Key to stop AutoRun. Navigate to the Ulead folder and Click on the Setup.exe File. When you are asked which language to install see whether you have English or an International English check box. Make absolutely sure you check the right Language Pack or you may be in for trouble. Or you may have the wrong software for your Region.
How to further check if the Disc is Good or Bad, go to the neighbors house and install on their computer. Mind you if the Software works, You Must uninstall to insure you are not in copyright violation. This tells you the Disc is good and there is something on Your Computer that is causing the problem.
No 3—Your computer is far more difficult to diagnose, but lets try a few simple Tech Techniques. If you have tried all of the above and Ulead will install and crashes or won’t install, get a REG Cleaner and run it. Do not delete The REG File created when the Registry was cleaned.
Reboot to Safe Mode, have to have a PS2 mouse, Ulead does not support USB Mouse in Safe Mode. Install Ulead and reboot. If Ulead works after booting to the OS, then Find the REG Key that was created while cleaning the Registry by the Reg Cleaner. Now double click on the REG Key and all that was cut from the Registry will be put back. If Ulead Stops functioning after you reinstall the REG Key then you know the Registry is at fault.
Otherwise if you got this far and nothing works, REAL TECH Support is in order, as Ulead will know more about the relevant Issues than I can address Here.
That’s my two cents worth. Oh Sometimes Multiple Desktops interfere with installations.
As I say Good Luck.

A little too much time on your hands?
You guys have WAYYYYYYYYY too much time on your hands. LOL
The world already knows that if you do serious graphic and video work - all ulead products will completely mess up your machine. None of them are very stable for long and whenever you hear someone complaining about weird things their PC is doing - ASK FIRST if they have a ULead product on it, and the answer is typically yes.
I do a lot of video/DVD post production work. There are several of the more popular software packages that I use for my post production work. Anytime in the past that I have had to call support for ANY of the video products I use - one of the FIRST things they would ask me is if I have ANY ULead products installed on my machine. If I told them yes - they ended the conversation and told me to remove it. Sure enough - ULead was always the cause.
Till this very day - any and all ULEAD video editing products will screw up all your other editing software - and at times - even a ULead graphics package like PI or GIF animator will break all your other video editing tools. ULead has never addressed this and it has been an ongoing problem. When you speak to people who are doing professional video editing and post production - all the good ones will tell you to NEVER go near a ULead package or you're asking for trouble.
The point is: If ULead hasn't addressed this issue after all these years do you really expect their tech support to know what the hell to tell you about your problems? I was told WITHOUT DOUBT from a tech the other day that PI WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT MSJAVA.DLL. He was wrong. He also told me adamantly that ALL ADOBE PRODUCTS WILL FAIL WITHOUT MSJAVA.DLL. --- He was wrong again.
So do you really have faith in their techs? Do you really have faith in their products? Do you really have faith in their tech support? COME ON NOW! This is why no professional, experienced GA has ever head of "PhotoImpact" nor would they consider using it.
I'm out of this thread because I can go on all day - and at the same time - feel that I have no life. So enjoy the rants guys and gals. And yes....you won't need msjava.dll on your machine - and I won't name names from tech support who were so insistent that you will need it!

Life is Such a Crap-shoot! One day you are a shoe model, the next you run over your foot with a lawnmower, what can I tell you!!
My Adobe Photoshop crashes everytime I open more than one photo, or use a filter. The Culprit turned out to be a file called MMXCore.8bx. It is incompatible with my AMD CPU. Once Turned off Photoshop works like a dream.
It took me almost two years to find this problem. All of that time Adobe Tech support could not solve the problem for me. I by accident found the information on the Internet from other users. When I knew what to look for on the Adobe Web Site, sure enough I found A FAQS telling about this file and its potential problems, how to rename and put it out of action. This FAQS had been on the Web Site for more than a year.
WHAT TECH SUPPORT!!!!!
I have other issues with my four other Graphics programs, that I have to pay $600 to $1000 every few years, and get nothing but aggrivation in return. All so I can use that one or two effects or filters I need in my artwork.
What can I tell you, I am an artist, I never stop trying, Dead Threads or Dead Graphic Programs!!
Oh by the way I have been an artist for 40 years, my first computer was a 1k Atari Keypad. Think that was about 35 years ago, have lots of CD's on my wall of trophies. Most Failed programs that don't work, but through all of that as I said before, "I persist!"
LOL

Then my advice....
Well if you are a GA, with these issues, my strong advice is reformat your HD, reinstall your main apps - and NEVER put another ULEAD product on that box. If tech support knew ANYTHING, they'd tell you the same thing!

Suprisingly I am not a Graphic Artist, my father was, owned several Newspapers. Was a Newscaster on TV, book writer.
I did most of the Job printing for him, but never did the Artwork or composition. I never aspired to my fathers fame, it made him very sad and took the fun out of his life.
NO, I became a bonafied starving ARTIST. The one that does portraits, seascapes, all of that kind of good stuff.
I already had to work with computers so began using graphic programs to create Abstract works of art for myself. I used many programs in the beginning, but for the money I found that Ulead was the easiest to use and had some qualities I needed in creating Abstract works. It led to prints and so on, so I have always used Ulead, Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, Corel Draw, and MetaCreations Painter, now owned by Corel, as the necessary tools of my trade.
I have weathered 20 years of bad code and errant programs, all the while trying to maintain the Technique and Style of my Art Work. My Computer expertise made things a lot easier. So I am married to Ulead, and just like any marriage, for better or for worse, we co-exist, and work hand in hand, sometimes with astounding success, and sometimes, we depart and go to our respective rooms to sulk.
I would agree that If it is seemingly impossible to Install Ulead into an Existing OS, after trying everything possible, and nothing works, that it would be another possiblity to reinstall everything.
Wipe the Hard Drive three times, and then reinstall your OS, don't update your OS, don't validate your Key, or go on to the Web at all, then install Ulead before any other updates or applications. Your chances of a successful Install are very Good. If you still can not install Ulead Tech Support, or as you say Not installing Ulead is your only option.
If you want to substitute a program for UleadImpact that is equally good try Corel PaintShop Pro. For the money it is almost as good as Photoshop.
I would have to add, that UleadImpact, although not perfect, is a very good program for the money you have to invest, compared to a program like Photoshop.
Recently Ulead has tried very hard to emulate the higher guality Graphic Programs, many of the newer additions have become indispensible to me, expecially the Task feature. I have almost 25,000 images I must maintain, and Batch processing them all at once with a Newly Created Task, such as convert UFO file formate to PSD, allowed me to get rid of my three 300 gig hard drives, reducing the space to a single drive. I can apply a Gamma to all of my 25,000 images now with ease and speed. I created several of my Web sites with Ulead and Ms FrontPage.
I give up a little, and I get a little. After-all nothing in life is perfect. Besides, a little aggrevation in your life sharpens your inner skills. Don't you think?
