A newbie question

Post by ladybug »

Hello all,

I'm very new to this and to ulead products. Before I go and purchase one in particular I had to ask something. Can someone please tell me what is the difference between ulead videostudio and ulead movie factory as they both seem to do the same kinds of things?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I have viewed both products and they are so much alike so I'm struggling with the choice between the two products. Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forums,

They are similar, but not really that much.

VS is a video editing application. It provides the tools for editing your video, and outputting to a wide variety of formats. Included with VS is a Burn module, to allow you to put your productions on DVDs. This is a scaled down version of DVD MF. It does not offer all the DVD authoring capabilities that DVD MF does.

DVDMF is a DVD authoring program, that provides the way to build menus, and place your videos onto DVDs. It recently has been complimented with a very limited means of editing.

So if you wish to just take your videos and get them to DVDs, and not do much editing, MovieFactory would best fit. On the other hand, if you need to do a bunch of editing, and not want a lot of authoring choices, VideoStudio would work.

Than some of us use both, and even third party applications..;)

In fact the two programs are complementary -- each does a different part of the video editing and authoring process better than the other. Video Studio is primarily an editing program, though to make it stand alone, it also has an authoring/burning module attached (i.e. for building menus and doing the actual burn of your project to disc). Originally, this added module was pretty basic, but over the years it has become more sophisticated.

Movie Factory, on the other hand, is primarily -- as its name implies -- where you actually produce the final movie from your edited project. In other words, it is primarily and authoring and burning program, but again to make it stand alone, it has an editing module attached. In this case, however, the editing you can do in it remains pretty basic.

To sum up, if you are interested in doing a lot of editing, adding a variety of transitions, using filters, blue screen effects, etc, then you should choose Video Studio. But if you only ever intend to do a few simple edits, and want a wider choice of ways to make your final disc look better in terms of menu etc, the choose Movie Factory. Video Studio is also these days pretty good at the production end of things, but not as good at it as Movie Factory.
