I'm having some problems with Visual Studio 10+ and 11.5+. One problem is that neither seems to recognize the presence of my DVD Writer (HP420N). This is a new issue for VS10+ as I have (several months ago) burner several DVD's successfully. However, since then lots of things have happened to this PC, including VS11.5+ and XP SP3. I have read the entries relating to DVD Writer problems and will next install the latest version of Direct X.

I note that there is a "UVS10_HD_BurningPack.exe" patch which may or not have been installed (my memory failure), but that would not explain why it worked a couple months ago??? Should this be installed? "UVS10_SP1_E.exe" was installed.

One option is to uninstall both and then reinstall. I have, however, for VS10+ created a lot of templates with "Movie Maker Manager" which I would not want to lose, if I can help it!!!!

Where are they stored and how can I export/save them for re-installation after i do the new installs??

Any other options?

Usually when a program doesn't recognize hardware such as a CD/DVD writer/player, the problem might be in the hardware itself or the operating system.

Check to see if the writer is in your device manager, if it isn't that is the problem. If it is, disconnect it and boot the computer and shut down. Reconnect it and boot the computer to see if it is recognized by the programs.

I can't answer the question about the Make Movie templates.

You may not have to reinstall the programs if you can get your writer working.

The make Movie Manager files are saved to MovieTem.Dat

For VS 10 you should find it here.

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0

Copy the file MovieTem.Dat to a safe location.

Replace the file after re-install.

The library files are also in this folder called VS_Video.dat etc

They can be saved in the same manner.

Just a thought on the CD/DVD writer

If another program is using the writer VS will not see as installed.

Nero InCd caused a lot of similar problems using the writer in the background.

Folks......Well, DirectX update and new firmware didn't change anything.

Trevor....Thanks for the idea. I don't see anything that is being loaded at bootup which would be accessing the DVD drive. But then, if it is not shown in MSCONFIG then I'm not sure where to look.

By the way, I read somewhere about setting the DMA to something. Do you know anything about that and where/how to do it?

Sometimes burners comes with an OEM disc which often contains an old and cut down version of the Nero Suite (sometimes called Nero Essentials or similar). The older versions of Nero, if installed, usually automatically installed InCD which as Trevor has already said, takes over the burner and denies access to it to other programs such as VS.

But you can easily see if InCD is installed by looking at Control Panel > Programs & Features (in Vista -- I think it was Add Program in XP) where it will be listed separately. If it is there, simply uninstall it.

The problem is that there are similar packet writing software programs (which is what InCD is) in other suits, such as Roxio -- though the Roxio one allows you to deactivate it internally, rather than having to uninstall it completely.

Folks....Well, I guess no one has the answer about how to export Movie Maker templates....

Anyway, to continue with my DVD Writer problems. I take a system disk image before undertaking any significant updates. I had images from before and after XP SP3. I have restored from each image. Both "Before" and "After" SP3 VS 10+ works fine - it sees the DVD Writer.

After SP3 I did a bunch of MS Updates, uninstalled VS11 (not Plus), and installed VS11Plus. And probably some other things before I took my next system disk image. When I restore to that point in time, the DVD Writer is not found by VS10+ (or VS11.5+).

So, as I'm writing this I'm in the process of redo-ing as much of the above as I can and am checking VS10+ at each stage.

Folks......AND THE ANSWER IS....

In the above posting I indicated that after XP SP3, I did a bunch of things before my next System disk image. This time I skipped the MS Updates, and directly uninstalled VS11 (non Plus).

After that uninstall VS10+ no longer sees the DVD Writer!!!

Any ideas why uninstalling VS11 would do this? Other programs on that PC continue to see the DVD Writer. Seems to be isolated to ULead Visual Studio.

It should also be noted that installing VS11+ does not seem to correct the problem.
