Importing from a Canon hv30 in HDV

I am importing from a canon hv30 in HDV. I have figured that I set the
import to MPEG, not DV. But there are lots of options. do I pick the
DVD ntsc AC3 HQ 16_9 for best file for editing for later use in DVD or
one of the others?
Also, I frequently want to fade out my video. It won't let me do that
without putting another clip after my last clip. I do that by putting a
black video...but aren't there transitions in and out that can be used
at the beginning and end of a video?
Finally, when I click on a clip in a video project, the curser often
goes to the beginning of the clip, not where I want to place it. If I
don't realize it did that, I edit the wrong place. Is there some
setting somewhere I am missing that can stop this (like whole word
select in Word that you can shut off).

I myself do not have HD and so will let one of my colleagues offer advice about the best format to import from your camcorder.
DV is higher quality than MPEG2 but I am aware that many HD camcorders record in MPEG2 albeit with higher bit rates and screen resolution than standard definition. Therefore MPEG2 may or may not be the best choice for YOUR particular camcorder.
