I downloaded the VS 11 trial, and whenever I try to do anything with a video file VS hangs then I get a "VS NOT RESPONDING" message from the OS. I'm using Vista X64 with all the latest updates (automatic updates). I can make it fail every time by doing this: open a small AVI file from a Canon video camera; try to use the audio tools to automatically level the sound volume. MoveMaker works fine. Adobe Premiere Elements works fine. I have been using Ulead products since the early 90's, and would like to stick with VideoStudio, since it has audio editing that other medium grade video editors don't have. If can get the demo to work, will buy the full upgrade from VS-9. Hardware is a high end custom built PC with Intel dual-processor, 4 gig ram, high end NVIDIA video card, etc. All other software works fine.

Out of the 800 or so different types of AVI files available what flavour do you have?

What difference does it make? I've downloaded and tested every video editor on the market and all handle the AVI files that come out of my Canon zr930 just fine, including Vista Movie Maker. Are you saying VideoStudio has to have a certain flavor of AVI file to work? If so, how does one tell what flavor it is?

Well it certainly does make a difference. You need to use the proper codec. Your camcorder does record DV, and I assume you're transferring it as DV. Now the question is are you transferring (capturing) it as Type-1 or Type-2? VS seems to handle Type-1 much better than Type-2. Other programs such as Adobe's use Type-2.

What audio tools are you referring to, and how would they automatically level the volume? Please be more specific on what steps you're taking, so that we may try and replicate this. If it is a VS issue, then some of us should be able to make VS crash doing the same actions as you.

Are you perhaps splitting the audio from the video track, then attempting to use the Normalize Filter? FWIW, I find the audio filters included with VS, less than desirable. I tend not to use them, and use third party applications for this..

Never mind. I've decided to go with Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum where nuances in video types are transparent to the user, rendering is twice as fast as VS, and sound editing within the application works very good (no 3rd party audio editor needed). Thanks for your efforts anyway.
