problem rendering long movies

Post by Michael Pless »

Hi,

I'm trying to render an mpeg file that I recorded with my tv tuner card. The properties indicate it is 50fps, and to burn it to DVD, my software requires it to be 25fps.

When I try to render it in VS9 (demo only, at this stage), I typically get through to around 49 minutes and then the rendering stops. This has happened several times and in two different packages. I miss out on the last 2-3 minutes which is frustrating.

That it occurs in two different applications indicates there is probably something wrong with the file, except the cutoff doesn't always happen in the same place. I am certain I'm setting the in and out times correctly. the file plays correctly in its raw format.

I'm in Australia and working on a 720 x 576 format mpeg, recorded from a digital PAL signal.

Any thoughts on a solution would be appreciated. If I've neglected to pass on relevant infomration, please be patient with me and I'll amend the situation as soon as I can.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi,

50 frames per second is pretty esoteric - usually for the high end frame rates for special effects and slow motion.

You use PAL standard, whichs is 50 fields per second, two fields = one frame.

Does the system crash, or does it just seem to take forever to render?

BTW, have you tried *creating* and avi file and then going to the *make disc* stage?

And what are your system specs (primarily CPU speed, total and available RAM, OS and file system)?

Thanks for replying. Firstly, my system specs are okay, I think: AMD 2500+ CPU, 1 GB of RAM, oodles of HD space, Win XP home.

No, I haven't tried rendering the file to AVI, but I'm willing to try!

My software specifically says "50 fps" which I took to be "frames per second", but if you feel it is referring to "fileds", I accept that as you know more about this than I. I too was surprised. But, when I render the 1-hr show to mpeg at 25 fps, the file size drops from nearly 4GB to 2.2-ish, so some data is being discarded.

The problem isn't that the application (VS9 or MainActor) hangs or crashes, it's that the application seems to think it's finished prior to the out marker. If I try to render just the part that's missing, that renders fine and quickly.

Incidentally, I'm looking at upgrading from VS6 (hence the demo verison of VS9) and I've noticed a huge leap in rendering speed, which is always welcome.

Cheers,

Michael
