VS10 file format mismatch error with .gif files

Okay, I am running vista. I have the boxed version of VS10+. I reinstalled Flash from the CD and now I can see the animated .swf files that comes with VS.
When I try to import a .gif file as a video I get a "file format mismatch" error. I've been reading thru the forum and see where someone else had this problem and they worked around it by using Gif Animator.
I don't have Gif Animator and I really don't think I should have to use a work around as I see that other people are able to import .gif as video.
Any suggestions on how to get VS to recognize .gif format?
Thanks!

This is strange..
I also find that VS10+ on Vista does not allow inserting
Animated GIFs. It's not one of the formats found in the File Types drop down menu. I can with VS11+ but not VS10+. I know on my desktop, which is running XP Home, I can and have inserted Animated GIFs, into VS10+ as video clips.
Out of curiosity, did you install the Vista Patch for VS10+? I did, and wonder if that patch removes the Animated GIFs file types. I'm not at home so I can not double check my desktop install of VS10..
Vista Update

Yes, I did apply the Vista update.
I also have MSP8 on an XP workstation. I am able to open .gif files on it so I opened the files there and then created an avi file which I used in VS10. Not ideal but it works.
If anyone's able to find a fix for this problem I'd greatly appreciate it.

This is apparently a Vista thing. I've checked my VS10+ install on my XP machine, and it does allow Animated GIF. So there is not going to be a fix. For some unknown reason Corel removed that with the Vista Update patch.

Perhaps this is why they have not developed GIF animator now that Vista has been released. Perhaps there are some compatibility issues.

That would seem to be the case however as I stated in my first post, VS11+ (which is Vista certified) does allow inserting animated GIFs as video files, on Vista. So the mystery is why doesn't VS10+ with the Vista patch? One of Corel's goofs...
EDITED
Don't know if this will work, but worth a try as a work-around..
You would need to completely uninstall VS10+, and then re-install it. Once re-installed do not install the Vista Update. Then run VS10+ in XP compatibility mode. See if that will allow inserting animated GIFs. If so, it certainly would confirm that the Vista Update removes the ability to use animated GIF files...

Ron -- it just so happens I have, on this Vista Ultimate computer, VS10+ loaded without the Vista patch (plus, of course, VS11.5+). I have just successfully installed not one but two animated GIFs in VS10+, and both played fine. So I suspect you are totally correct. Mind you, it adds to the total mystery, If animated GIFs work in VS10 on XP, in VS10 unpatched on Vista and in VS11/11.5+ on Vista, why on earth was it taken away for VS10+ as patched for Vista???
(For what it is worth, I have VS10+ unpatched on Vista simply because it works perfectly for sending my edited HDV from my Canon HV20 back to the camera, whereas VS11.5+ won't do it for Canons... I had to install the special Canon patch for VS10, but it did not require the Vista patch to work... But there's another mystery. How come VS10 with Canon patch works under Vista with Canon cameras, but VS11/11.5+ does not under Vista???)

Well, the other oddity implicit in my own set-up is that I use VS10+ without the Vista patch but *with* the Canon patch to export my edited HDV back to my Canon HV 20 because for some reason, VS11+/11.5+ can't do it. And it is apparently only Canon cameras that it does not work with. In other words, it looks as though someone -- and I'm not pointing a finger!!

-- forgot to include the code of the VS10 Canon patch into VS11!!

This is not quite a solution, since using without patch is not playing any sound on my latest computer.
Embedded audio I mean, sound clips play OK, but system stream audio/video will not output anything.
So basically it means VS10 is simply not working with Vista.
It's either Vista mode without animated GIF (and I have them as logos in EVERY single video I did, have hundreds of them and will not give them away), or compatibility mode without audio preview.
You see I passed on VS11 because it is not working under Win2000, and since VS10 is also not working under Vista, XP seems to be the only way.
Nice job Microsoft.
In the mean time, I am learning to appreciate solid video editors software from other companies more and more....
Nice job too Corel, you are losing a faithful customer with a half-dozen of your products, and usually reluctant to change and re-learning, what I see as a half-captive user... MediaSTudio too old, Cool3D unsupported. A freeware picture editing almost as good as PhotoImpact...
Way to go... I think they bought Ulead with the final idea of discarding them.
unable to open swf files - file format mismatch

I haven't used the motion files for a while...tonite I was doing some editing and I went to use one...When I try to drop any of the motion files on the time line, I get an error message "the content of these files is unreadable"
I deleted one of the files and tried to re-import it and got the message"unable to open file, file format mismatch"
I am running VS11+ with Windows XP media center. This feature worked fine in the past....
the only change I've made to my computer recently has been to add some quicktime files ( i love the digital juice swipes on the overlay track). I also upgraded to Pinnacle Studio 11 on this computer and on another computer. The other computer has VS10 and the motion files are still working...so I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not.
Anyway - just looking for suggestions to repair this. Please let me know if anyone has any advice.
thanks.

Ilene, I believe you need to reinstall Flash Player from your original VS10 cd. VS10 doesn't like the newer version of Flash.
flash file issues

Hi - thanks for responding. Actually I'm running VS11+ ( although I have VS10) on another computer. Today, I uninstalled and re-installed flash from the adobe website but to no avail. Still not recognizing the files.
I was hoping that this would be a similar situation to the corrupt filter file ( vfilter.rsf) that you simply delete and reopen ulead when the filters aren't functioning correctly. ( but thats another thread....)
Is there some file that tells these flash files what to do, that I can delete and reinstall?
By the way - I noticed that I was having trouble viewing web sites that required flash...so thats why I thought to uninstall and reinstall flash today. At first it didn't solve the problem - but then I tweeked some of the security settings on IE and the web sites started to work again.
So now my problem is simply isolated to flash files in Ulead.
ANy suggestions would be welcomed...if not I'll just live without, or download X2.
thanks.

Ilene -- in a sense you have wandered from the original object of this thread.
Anyway, have a look at this post which should resolve your Flash problems:
