Yes, in some cases though when the program doesn't calculate the size correctly unchecking that option did make a difference on my system.

There is one additional thing to check and that's go all the way to the burning module and click on "Options".
Make sure that the material your working with isn't also being "Archived" to the DVD which might be the case.
This was the default setting when I made slideshows and they were exceeding the size of the CD/DVD. The program was "Archiving" the source material to CD/DVD.
It's under Advanced or Options in the burning module.

Hope this helps,

No, it's a movie, no slides; and that item is uncecked. I agree that, if it's getting a calculation wrong, it must be using the wrong equation and that, therefore it can do almost anything you'd like to imagine. Which is what I suspect it's doing, making it up as it goes along.

It looks as if my only option is to buy Procoder to do the coding, so that MF4 ony has to compile the menus, it seems capable of that, but little more

This isn't happening on my system(s) with the program.
Like the previous post I had to Force a re-render of the video(s).

I understand that that may be so, but my material is on DV tape, so re-rendering is meaningless. MF4, when capturing directly from the tape, correctly reads the frame aspect ratio flag and reports it, but then uses the footage as though it were 4:3. The only way I can get MF4 to properly interpret the flag is to get Sony DV Gate Motion to do the capture, but it gives me a set of 2GB files, which, when imported into MF4, are reported as being too big for a dvd, irrespective the required MPEG compression. So it's no solution.

It seems I have no alternative but to abandon MF4 as the MPEG compressor. The pair of bugs I've found are acting together to prevent me using MF4 to do what I want, unless there's a patch for these, apparently known, bugs, I have no alternative but to use other software.

First, make sure to have the 4.02 update installed for MF4.

Before you spend money on another decoder I would load some dv.avi's
onto the timeline. Click on the GEAR icon and UNCHECK "Do Not Convert Mpeg Compliant Files".
Then change the default video_bit_rate to 4000 by clicking on the GEAR icon again and "Change Mpeg Settings"-> Customize.
The project size should change accordingly.
Or, do that in the reverse order. Either way with "Do Not Convert" checked ON it's always using 7000VBR as the calculation.

It probably shouldn't work that way but that's the way it's been working even though these are avi's. The audio part of the file is compliant, don't know.

Well spotted, young man, that's done it. It set CBR 2Mb/s, and unchecked "Do not convert MPEG compliant files", not it shows a small project, and that size changes with compression settings.

Now all I have to find out is how to get it to capture from DV and keep the 16:9 flag.

Thanks for the suggestion, that's made this project possible. :D

Ahem, I've just found the capture format dialogue, thanks to spending some time reading the manual. It was set to DVD 4:3, change to AVI and it all works now.

Ho hum, back to the day job, sorry for spreading alarm.
