Captured file extension?

Post by videoguy »

When you capture to VideoStudio from a mini dv tape, what is the file extension of the captured file? I am currently waiting for a copy of VS 11.5 Plus coming from Amazon.com

thanks, robert

If you capture to the Mini-DV native format, it would be DV (Digital Video) which uses the AVI container. So the video file would have the avi extension. VS uses a bizarre naming convention such as 050324.avi. Capturing using firewire is actually a real time transfer of data. There is no encoding going on. There are 2 "flavors" of DV, Type-1 and Type-2. Most people have better luck using Type-1, and VS seems to get along better with Type-1.

While you're waiting, here's some good reading...

For a brief summary of AVI and MPEG-2 please read the article at this link:

Hi vidoman, I'm sorry, I left out a most important fact, that I would be capturing HDV into VS. My old NLE created m2v files, and I was wondering what VS would create.

thanks again......robert

I trust you also realise that an .m2v file is video only -- no audio. It is usually the output from Adobe Premiere Pro. There should be a separate matching audio file. So you would need to put both in the VS timeline and match them up there.
