Hello, I am waiting for the new VS 12 to come out, and was wondering if it can read m2t files. This is the native hdv format that is recorded on the Sony HVR-DR60 hard drive.

Yes, Nice cam by the way. Glad to see Sony made a cam that records in the hd-mpeg2 format to harddisk.

Hello, no it's not a camcorder, it's a remote 60gb hard drive unit that records 4.5 hrs of hdv footage in m2t format, not to be confused with the m2ts format.
Will VS still recognize this m2t format?

I'm waiting for VS 12 to come out soon. My other NLE, Pinnalce Studio 11.5 Ultimate, will not read the files directly from the recording unit, so I am looking for another editor that will, and will also burn a hd-dvd project to a regular dvd. I see where VS does the burning part, so I wanted to be sure about the file recognition.

Well, if it's the same .m2t as comes out of my Canon HV20, then VS11 (and 10, for that matter) can certainly read it and edit it. I don't know about the burning of a HDV hybrid disc using a standard definition DVD. But VS11.5+ can certainly burn a hybrid disc using AVCHD on a standard DVD, and even allow the building of a menu for such a disc -- unlike most other current editing packages.

HD-DVD may not be in VS12. I wouldn't count on it.

You could go with VS11.5+ with all the updates and be able to load the videos from that external harddisk. I'm guessing that windows assigns a drive letter to this external harddisk? Yes/No?
Then you simply load them into an editor. I doubt that you can use that unit as a capturing device and control it like an external camcorder. When VS captures directly from a tape unit it captures directly from the HD cam and converts the video(s) from TS (transport stream) to PS (Program Stream) format. That's when you use VS11.5+ to capture directly.
With the patches you can easily load your HDV.m2t videos, which are in the TS format and VS11.5+ will output them in the TS format. You can also convert them to the PS format.
As you know they are natively in the TS format (Transport Stream) format.

I didn't know that " Pinnalce Studio 11.5 Ultimate" required Program Stream (PS) only format.

That unit is a simply an external FAT32 harddisk that connects via firewire.
It also must be splitting your files into 4gig segments (20 minutes per segment). Nice device.

VS11.5+ (Plus) has support for HD-DVD. I'd hate to mislead you into thinking that VS12 or later versions will be supporting HD-DVD.
To give you a clue HD-DVD is NOT in MF7Plus which was just released in Aus.. I really think that many companies will be dropping support for HD-DVD.

I'll guess I'll look for version 11.5 Plus and do any updates and see how that works. I think you're right in that HD DVD will be no longer supported in the future. When avchd proves to be hassle free, I'm sure I'll move over to that some day. The wrong high def format won out in my opinion.
