Unwanted reencoding of compliant mpeg files?

Post by citizenpb »

I have a 1 hour long project. I first encoded the project to mpeg2 format with variable bit rate (8264kbps) and LPCM audio. It took about 1 hour. I then attempted to use the encoded file to create my DVD and checked the "do not encode compliant mpeg files" option. The DVD took about 1 hour again which makes me think that the file was actually reencoded. I double checked all the options and I am sure I had all the same settings for the DVD as for the original mpeg.

Am I right to think that the DVD creating process should be much quicker if I am using a compliant mpeg file? Anything I might have done incorrectly to cause it to reencode?

Where did you "double check all the options"?

Are you using a menu?

And if you have VS 10 or 11 and did not deactivate one of the menu transitions, then it can take forever to convert the menu to video, I have found. And once, it even caused the whole process to crash. These menu transitions for In and Out are at the bottom left of the Edit tab in the burning module.

You can tell if the main video is being reconverted in the burning module by looking at what is listed in the progress bars. If it is says 'converting title' then it is definitely re-encoding the main video, and this should not happen.

Can you right click on the video you are using, and give us ALL the properties, not just the format and bitrate, please?

Well, I checked the settings again and it seems when encoding the mpeg I hadn't selected "perform non-square pixel rendering", but I did when creating the DVD. So I'm guessing that's why it re-encoded the video - would I be right?.

Certainly when I selected that option for the mpeg, reencoded it and then remade the DVD it only took around 8 minutes, rather than 1 hour as before. Although most of that time it was in the "convert title" process, suggesting it was re-encoding.

Bit confusing, but if it's only going to take 8 minutes to create the DVD (plus time to encode menus etc.) then I can live with that. Thanks for your input guys.
