Sue, I'm in the same situation where I have just purchased a HD camcorder (JVC GZ-HD40) but I don't have a blu ray burner or blu ray player. What settings/properties did you use to convert your HD clips in standard def DVD?

I found the tutorial "Editing High Definition Video with Ulead VideoStudio" by J.C.Hunter told me everything I needed to know about downconverting. it was written for VS 10+ but still works with 11.5+ which is what I use.

This is still listed in the Forum tutorial section, though when you try to access it, a message says it's been re-directed - can anyone shed some light on this?

If you can't find the tutorial, I'll type out the relevant chapter for you.

Incidentally, I've invested in a blu-ray player which also plays AVCHD, so I can get great results from a blu-ray disc (still pricey and must be burned in a blu-ray burner) but also AVCHD which can be burned on a normal disc (but shouldn't exceed 4.3 gb)

Taken from J.C.Hunter tutorial:

1. With the project file open, select SHARE tab, then click on CREATE VIDEO FILE/CUSTOM

2. In the SAVE AS TYPE control, select MPEG files. Click the OPTIONS button to open the VIDEO SAVE OPTIONS window. Select the COMPRESSION tab. Select DVD-NTSC (or DVD-PAL) compression, and VARIABLE DATA RATE = 9800kbps. This setting will produce the best picture, but somw DVD players may have difficulty. If so, lower bit rate to 8000kbps. I usually convert the audio compression to Dolby for conventional DVDs.

3. Select the GENERAL tab. Select the 720x480 (720x576 PAL?)frame size. Set FRAME TYPE (Field Order) to frame-based - recommended to suppress interlace artifacts that are magnified by the downconversion process.

4. Name the file and hit the SAVE button. Downconverting takes about one hour per 20 minutes of video on my computer.

5. Burn the video file on a conventional DVD as follows;
Select New Project, open SHARE tab, select CREATE DISC. select ADD MEDIA/ADD VIDEO FILES, select your downconverted video file. Then set DVD BURN properties with the tiny gear-shaped icon on the lower left, setting the burn properties to exactly match the video file properties.
Hit the BURN button.

This is the tutorial which got me going - since then, I've experimented with differing settings till I found what suited my equipment best.

I justed created my 1st full HD movie using the MPEG PAL HD format from my JVC camcorder (not the AVCHD format) , I noticed that:-

a) playback on my PC was poor, so I had to switch on smart proxy.

b) I initially got the 'blips' at the start of each new clip after the transition. After loading the patch & switching on smart proxy the 'blips' dissappeared.

I have a quad 9400 2.66 Hz PC. I'm using X2 Pro.

I was wondering if you use the MPEG PAL HD format & if so,

a) do you need to use smart proxy?
b) did you experience the 'blip' issue?
