In VS8, what is a good way to view a pan & zoom effect so that it plays back in the actual time that it will take in the final production? Several times I have used this effect and got it looking just the way I want, but then when I burn a DVD and play it back, it's much too fast. I know that there are duration settings for things like titles, pan & zoom, and other effects, but it's hard for me to picture how many seconds or fractions of a second something should take up without actually viewing it in realtime.
Is there a good way to do this from within the VS8 editing environment?

UVS isn't very good at previewing things quickly and accurately.
If you want to see what something will really look like, then I would suggest that you set a preview range that covers your pan & zoom, and render that to a video file for viewing in an external program such as Windows Media Player.
UVS 9 adds a new preview option in the Share tab, which is nice because it shows the video using the project's output dimensions rather than fitting it into the Preview window.
