I am not sure if this is the right thing to do posting this request as I am new to all this so apologies if I have done wrong.

I am using Ulead video studio 11 and my file is to big to fit on to a normal 4.7 gb as it is 6.2 gb. I thought I would render it as a video file (becuase at the moment it is a VSP file) and then maybe use DVD shrink to make it smaller. But it keeps crashing on me and won't render. I have clicked on the share icom and dvd 16.9.
I have tried a much smaller file and that works ok. Am I doing this right or is there another way of doing this apart from putting it on to two dvd.

Is DVDshrink crashing, or is Video Studio crashing?

I don't remember ever getting a crash with DVDshrink... All of my Video Studio crashes have been caused by the particular file... I usually don't know what's "wrong" with the file... I've just noticed that some files cause a crash and others don't. (If you have a corrupt file, you may be able to fix it with a 3rd-party program.)

What format is your original file? The size of your original file isn't usually important, because unless it's DVD-compatible MPEG-2, it will have to be re-rendered anyway.


File size depends on bitrate (and playing time). Here is a handy Online Bitrate Calculator. (If you configure your project settings for a lower bitrate, your file will be smaller.)

Am I doing this right or is there another way of doing this apart from putting it on to two dvd.

You could use a dual-layer DVD, but "burned" dual-layer DVDs can be flakey. As a "rule of thumb", you can fit 90 minutes of commercial-quality video and Dolby audio onto a sngle-layer DVD. And personally, I try not to "push it" much beyond 2 hours, because I start to notice the quality-loss.

thank you for your prompt reply I don't really understand bit rate too much I'm afraid. I believe ulead saves it as as MPEG2 video but as a vsp file so I can't seem to open it in Nero as I thought I could use Nero to maybe compress it more or DVD shrink (which I haven't used yet) )I am a total novice to video editing)

When I click share file DVD it says I have 6.2 gb and goes into the red so I didn't think I could render it??

So I thought I would render it and save it as a video file in ulead studio and try and reopen it in another programme but it keeps crashes in ulead and won't go any further so I can't even render it.
I have tried a much smaller file in ulead and have saved it as an avi and that worked ok.
Hope this makes sense I am not very good at explaining myself.

Sorry it's me again I have just tried rendering straight on to a dvd and it has crashed again I have got a feeling something may be corrupt how on earth do I find this out any ideas.

I will be gutted because a lot of this is footage I have recorded off sky and it has now been deleted. This is going to be a tribute DVD for my friends son who died last year in Afghanistan so ity is really important.

You mention a vsp file - please view:
What is a project file? for an explanation of that term.

Now we need some more information from you.
When you recorded it off Sky - did you record it with a TV card on your computer or to some other medium such as a DVD recorder?

When we know how it was recorded and ended up in your computer we will be able to help. Unless it is several hours old it should also be able fit onto a standard 4.3 DVD - it will be a case of getting the various bit rate settings right.

Hopefully I have completed information regarding my computer system correctly
The information from SKY+ was recorded on to a dvd file type Video RM and Video TS.

I imported this directly into ulead studio 11 and then added it to my project.

I do understand to a decree (from you kind information that you sent me) that this VSP file takes information from everywhere. Do I assume I have to render it to even be able to open it in another soft wear programme??

I confess I do not yet understand the bit rate but hopefully I will continue to learn with an extreme lot of help from people like you.

Just to fill you in a little on things here:
As the link from steve shows, the .vsp file is not a video file. It is a file quite similar to a notepad file in that is it very small and only contains information for VS as to what files are being used, where they are, what cuts, transitions, changes etc you want done to those files.

VS and similar video editing programs engage in what is called "non-destructive" video editing. What that means is that the original files are never changed or interferred with.
So when you are editing and chopping and changing things in your project the original files are never touched but those DESIRED chops and changes are recorded in the .vsp file sort of like a wish-list!
It is ONLY when you RENDER to a new file using the Share tab that you will have a new video file.

Thank you for the advise the penny is finally dropping re vsp files. I think I have managed to find the corrupt file and have used Steve's advise to make my project smaller and fit on to a dvd.

The final problem I seem to have is my images and video footage are showing up as different sizes on playback on the DVD player.
I have set the default as fit to project size (16.9) but I am wondering because I made the file smaller if this may have affected the sizes some how.

Do you mean the videos are one size and the still images another?
For things to be 16.9 they need to be 16.9 to start off with - otherwise things get stretched and distorted to become "wide screen".
