Vista update removes xvid codec from video studio 10plus

Post by mect »

When I had xp, I would always use the xvid codec when encoding my videos. When I upgraded to vista, this option (along with several others under avi custom settings) was gone. I reinstalled and ran it without the vista patch, and the options are back, but it runs all jerky. Is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks

It might be the "disappearing codec" problem, sometimes seen in both XP and Vista. I experienced it last year. See my solution from back then:

Please note that you should search the entire registry, as codecs can "hide" several places, not only the ones shown in the post above.

Thanks for the idea, but no luck. I checked all the specific locations others mentioned, but none were empty. Is there a way to actually search for empty registry entries though? I'm not quite sure how one would do this. It might be worth it to reinstall and check the registry before and after.

I think I searched for vidc. as most codecs are called vidc.something. Those few not named vidc. is most likely grouped together with some that are.

Sorry to bring this back up, but I'm just getting back around to it. I searched for empty registry entries, but didn't find any. So then I checked into what was changed with the update. I noticed that a folder named "vio" had some changed files which looked like they had something to do with codecs. So I tried replacing them with the files before the update, and sure enough, the xvid codec was back. Unfortunately, as was somewhat expected, it did break at least one thing, as I was then unable to capture video from my camcorder over firewire. By returning the old "vio" files, I was then able to capture again, but xvid was gone. I guess I can just swap them back and forth depending on what I'm doing.

Here's something to try...

How about just reinstalling the Xvid codec? Unless there's something about Xvid that will not install on Vista, that should cure your problem, and you will not have fiddle around with the flip-flopping and possibly causing more damage...;)

***Disclaimer***
I use DivX Pro, not Xvid, and it did not break
anything on my Vista machine.

I too use DivX Pro (currently v. 6.6.1 -- OK so I haven't updated!). But I also have XVid, 'just in case', on the same computer, running Vista Ultimate 32 bit, and no problemo...

I have VS11.5+ and VS 10+ on this computer. Have just checked, and VS 10+ shows both my DivX and XVid codecs, as does VS 11.5+
