Hi All,

Could someone please inform me, long overlay clip - the type which fades out - slightly - your current image allowing you to bring in slowly another image..forgotten the correct word of this..just a nice transition from one image to another.

Anyway, wanting to take a longish clip and basically fade this clip- slightly - to the background so that i can place a couple of other clips on top of it...so it doesnt all look distracting.

Now, in the past - by mistake - i have managed to take the transition and place it over a clip - and works how i want it to work..but for the life of me cant seem to do it again..typical - just when i need it.

Any thoughts, simple enough process im certain...what do i need to do? Instead of placing this transition ( found in Burgers as well as on the normal vs transitions )..but wanting not to place this transition inbetween two clips but on top of one loooong clip if you know what i mean.

I think what you're wanting is called a cross-fade transition. However this can only be added to the main video track. You can do about the same thing using overlay tracks. In the overlay tracks, the Fade-In/Fade-Out is enabled by the graduated bars located on the Attribute tab, in the Enter and Exit sections.

Controlling this is done with the pause/duration sliders beneath the preview window. Sliding the triangles toward the ends results in a faster fade-in/out, and longer static display of the clip/image. Sliding them towards the middle results in a longer fade-in/out, and a shorter static display.

You can utilize 2 overlay tracks to cross-fade between 2 clips in the overlay tracks. You just need to overlap them, and adjust the fade-in/out if each to achieve the transition.

But, for once, did know this and have used this method in the past. Will use it for what i want to do now, but what i was after - and being at work with my earlier post - wrote in haste and hence perhaps not explaining myself best.

A couple of times in the past i have accidently somehow inserted the Crossfade transition to a video clip - on the timeline - and not as is the norm inbetween clips..allowing you to slowly fade between the two.

Just wanted to do this again, so that on the timeline my entire..say. 5minute clip...has a crossfade over its length.

Its really not that important Ron, so no need to reply, ways around it..just wondered whether i click on something first etc..to apply it to the clip instead of inbetween the clips.

A transition must be between 2 clips, whether they be 2 video clips or a video clip and a color clip.

For your example, to produce a 5 minute crossfade both clips would have to be at least 5 minutes long. Drop the transition between them and changed its duration to 5 minutes. That's a long transition.

What you may have done was put a clip in the video track, then put another in the overlay track and set the transparency to 50% (or so), so the underlying clip showed thru. Could that be what you did?
