Image resolution, size and format

Post by Marc Stols »

Hello
I want to add photographs between clips in a VS 7 project. What would be the optimum resolution and percentage(scale) to scan at before placing in the library. Also what would be the preffered format - JPEG, BMP, TIFF etc
Thanks a stack

I have used both Jpeg and Bmp files and found no difference in quality.
Scan your images to the same aspect ratio as your VS project frame, keeping the size at least the size as the frame size.
I have used larger images but again not seen any improvement in quality, VS merely reduces the size to fit.

If using Jpeg i would save at maximum quality.

Good luck

I usually scan at 600 but that's for saving the image itself.

For importing as static images I've found this to work best. Scan at about 150-200 to give yourself some room to work with. Crop the image at either a 4:3 or 16:9 ratio depending on what ratio your working with in your video, this will maintain the correct aspect. Photoimpact and other image editing apps have this ability. Resize to 720x480 (or whatever resolution your using). Convert to NTSC safe colors, again Photoimpact has this ability as do most better image editing applications Apply a soft blur to it, especially if it's from a digital camera. Note that resizing will distort the image especially for 16:9 but it will become undistorted once it's on video and displayed on a TV. Save as BMP if you have the space, most likely you'll be deleting this image anyway since it's aspect is skewed. JPG although fine for saving large images for storage will have issues with smaller images especially if there is large swaths of solid colors. Not sure what the setting is in VS but when you import it use the stretch to fit screen or whatever it is.

The thing to remeber about resolution is once you have scanned the image it's irrelevant unless you go to print it at it's default size.
