VideoStudio10+ use alternative workflow due to conv. errors

My last blog question is found in CONVERT ERROR in the BURNING PHASE. I was not able to get an answer to a new error while I was attempting to "create video file". A few people tried to help me but I wasn't providing the necessary project profiles all at once, and the blog got convoluted and boring. I think people just gave up, and I never got an answer. I hope to get help again.
I WAS FOLLOWING KEN'S INSTRUCTIONS TO save project in SHARE/ CREATE VIDEO FILE, but ULEAD CRASHES with pop up message of UNEXPECTED PROBLEM IN ULEAD. so i sent this email.
MY QUESTION WAS THIS:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ken,
thank you for providing these steps. I am trying to follow these simple steps but now the program "crashes", pop up box appears that there is an unexpected problem in ULEAD. it renders about 10 to 25% of project and then this message appears. I have tried saving 4 times. can you advise me what to do now? i really need to finish this project! is there something wrong with VIDEO STUDIO?

sincerely,
Jolson

Probably not. It sounds like there is something wrong with your project - possibly a corrupt file.

First of all, can you give us the properties of all the clips in your project - video, audio, images, etc. If the video is all from the same source just give the properties of one of them.

Then we begin an exchange of many emails because I wasn't sending the specifics that you need to analyze my project. I think the threads got so long and confusing that no one could follow it anymore. I was never able to find the resolution size. I hope that this information is more concise, and that it will enable you to advise me. Here is a compilation of my properties.

PROJECT PROPERTIES: VIDEO STUDIO 10 plus
VIDEO PROPERTIES are ATTRIBUTES 24 BITS 720 x 480, 16:9, FRAME RATE 29.970 frames/sec , DATA RATE is variable bit rate (max 9100 kbps)

MPEG PROPERTIES FOR FILE CONVERSION
MPEG FILES, 24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 tps

VIDEO DATA RATE variable (max 6000 kbps)
AUDIO DATA RATE 384 kbps
DOLBY DIGITAL AUDIO- 48 KHz

in change MPEG SETTINGS- these 2 boxes are checked; DO NOT CONVERT COMPLIANT MPEG FILE and AUTO REPEAT WHEN DISC PLAYBACK ENDS.

SONIC SOUNDS from Pro 4, no other audio is being used.
burn properties of the audio.
total samples; 1890839 samples

DVD NTSC 4:30
burn properties of the audio.
total samples; 1890839 samples,
attributes, 44.100 kHz, 16 bits, stereo

here is more information that i looked up:
DVD 4.7 G

i went into edit section, opened video (nothing in my library manager), went to image. THIS IS where i am not sure if a clip is also an image. VIDEO IMAGE, attributes are RGB true color, width 639 pixel, height 426 pixel, format is JPEG file interchange format, preview NONE, SIZE 23,164 bytes, readable is yes.

i also looked for clips through my documents, and found type of file MOVIE CLIP, opens with MEDIA PLAYER.

WHEN i look at video from edit , then right click on a video it says,
VIDEO TYPE, MPEG 2 VIDEO, UPPER FIELD FIRST, the rest of the information seems to be information that i already provided.
24 bits, 720 x 380, 16:9

I can¡¦t find resolution size.

thank you, i hope to hear from you.

Hi

There is a lot of information in the post.

I noticed you mention 16:9 as an aspect ratio but then change to 4:3

Which one is correct?

You are using Mpeg 2 files in your project, showing as 35 minutes long.
Why have you used different properties for your file conversion?????????

Have you ever been successful in burning a DVD ?

hi trevor,
i did post a lot of information in the post. yes, when gathering properties i did notice that one section says 16:9 , and the other says 4:3. i had planned to ask about this. i am not sure if that could be the cause of the UNEXPECTED . i will change to 4:3. you asked why i used different properties in my file conversion. i don't know enough to realize that the properties are conflicting. i did notice the obvious in the aspect ratios though.

this is the first time that i have burned a project.
thank you for asking me these questions.

Hi Jolson

I have looked through some of your previous posts, you do seem to be having many problems.

I would like you to try and burn a dvd without editing the video clip.

Do this

1 / Start a new project
2 / From File¡XPreferences¡Xtick show messages when inserting first video¡K¡K¡K.
3 / Now insert your video to the timeline, (right click the timeline and select Insert Video.)
4 / A pop up window shows, (Do you see this window)
5 / Select ¡¥Details¡¦
6 / the Right Hand Panel shows your video properties, use your mouse+click to highlight the text.
Use keyboard Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste to the forum or word doc.

7 / Select ¡¥Yes¡¦ and your project properties change to match your video file.

Do you get that far¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K..

If yes¡K¡K¡K.Save the project as Jolsons test create disc

Hi Jolson

Step one
was to insert the video to the timeline and match the video properties and the project properties.
The settings look ok

Jolson one thing I haven¡¦t asked, How long is the video file??????

As I said earlier I do not want to edit the clip but run through the burner process.
Just to see if there is any problems.

Step 2

Open the project ¡¥jolsons test create disc¡¦
Delete remove the video clip from the timeline.
You have an empty project
Save the project from File¡XSave¡¦

Share Create Disc, will open the burner module.
Under the option ¡¥Insert Media¡¦ select the ADD Video¡¦ (float your mouse over for a ¡¥tool tip¡¦ )
Browse your hard drive and insert your video file.

The clip will be inserted to the timeline.
You can view the clip properties ( right the clip and select properties) You should recognise these settings as ok.
The green bar to the bottom of the window indicates the length and size of the video.
Providing its below 4.3 Gb its ok.

Assuming Create Menu is still selected as default.
Press Next

From the Gallery drop down box select ¡¥Thumbnail Menus¡¦ this is the easiest of menus to work with.
Select one of the options, the preview screen will show the menu.

Select the ¡¥Edit¡¦ tab

These options are applied to the menu page only. Its best if you experiment with the different options.

From the preview screen ¡¥double click the text ¡¥My Title¡¦ change this to suitable text
The text under the thumbnail should show the clip name, change that in a similar manner.

Hit the remote control icon to play/view the movie.

Ok one more option, the Navigation controls how the movie plays from the menu.
Press the Options Cogwheel for project settings.
In the lower half view the Navigation Controls
Deselect ¡¥Auto repeat¡¦
Select ¡¥Continue to play the next clip¡¦
The DVD will play from the beginning and stop/ return to menu at the end.

Ok that¡¦s the burner set up, if you have problems on how to set, we will sort out later, I just want to see if things work.
OK

Press Next will take you to the final window.

About halfway down on the right is a down/up facing arrow (Hide/Show output options) select to expand the window.
That¡¦s enough for step two:-
To the lower right you will see the close button. Press the Close button.
You return to the edit timelines
Important.
Save the project again by File ¡V Save, remember this is your jolsons test create disc¡¦.
Do not add anything to this timeline, to be sure press File-New Project.

Ok

Step Three.
Launch Video Studio and open the jolsons test create disc¡¦

As expected the timelines are empty.
Share Create Disc will take you to the burner module, your video clip and menu settings should be preserved.

If you want to edit/change the menu page, do so.
When your finished, navigate to the last window.

You have two choices, Use a disc or Simulate a burn.

If you want to use a disc, place a DVD in your burner and hit the ¡¥Burn¡¦ button.

You will see an info window ¡¥This action will take some time to render¡¦
Press OK
The burn process starts.
What you should see first is the blue progress bar indicating ¡¥Convert Menu¡¦

If you see ¡¥Convert Menu¡¦ then all is ok, the process should continue to the end,

If you see Convert ¡¥Title¡¦ then your video clip is being rendered/converted, this is not good. Cancel the process
We have a compatible video file and should not re-code in this process.

Rather than using a disc we can create a DVD folder, this process creates the DVD structure but saves the folder to the hard drive.

Deselect Create Disc

Select Create DVD Folder,

Select the ¡¥Browse for a location to save DVD folders¡¦ to the right, select a location.

Hit the Burn button
This action will take some time¡K¡K..yes

The process continues first showing Convert Menu

Do you get that far.

hi trevor,
i really appreciate the time it took to lay out all of the steps for me to follow. thank you so much.
i began by following step 2. i got as far as 'BROWSE YOUR HARD DRIVE AND INSERT YOUR VIDEO FILE'. when i found jolsons create disc test, i attempted to open and insert but a pop up box appeared called OPEN VIDEO FILE . it said UNABLE TO OPEN, FILE FORMAT MISMATCH.

my video is around 35 minutes long. thanks trevor, i will wait for you to advise me. :) jolson

trevor,
i am looking closer at the folder that i found the jolsons test create disc was sitting in an audio folder. that would make sense that it was a format mismatch.

Hi Jolson

When you insert the video you are looking for the video file you used in the first step.
The ¡¥jolson create disc¡¦ file is a VSP. not a video file.

Do not get confused between a video file ¡¥Mpeg¡¦and the video studio project a .VSP

Jolson

When you look/browse your hard drive to view your video files, do you see the name with an extension, similar to uvs071230-007.AVI or uvs071230-007.MPG
or do you just see the name as uvs071230-007

hi trevor, i am working through the steps you have given me. i found the file, and am working in it. so disregard my mention of it being in an audio folder. i am curious though, i am in the menu stage, and making selections. should i also set up my chapters right now? in the past i have worked on the chapters and then they disappear. so i m not sure if i should take the time to set them up if we are just tyring to run a test case. what do you think i should do?
jolson :D

sorry trevor, i just read your note back to me. i think i am in the correct file. after some confusion between these positings, i found and renamed a file. when i just closed it , it was called TEST CASE.VSP
i am thinking that this is the correct type of file. so back to the question about creating the chapters again, sinced they have been disappearing in the burn attempts...

Hi Jolson

Slow down, sorry there is a delay in posting, but I am in the UK and the time scale is a bit limiting.

Anyhow.

When you Share-Create Disc¡XAdd Video you need to add a Mpg file not a VSP.
You must get this correct, again you have to insert an MPG file

A bit concerned that you have re-named the file.????????

From the burner module, right click the clip and select Media Clip Properties,
the information/properties window indicates the File Name this should show as an Mpg.
Is this correct.?
Please post the name of your video clip shown in the top box.
The box should be selected in blue,
use your keyboard, Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste to the forum.

Chapters
Yes, continue to create the menu, try out all the options, its just practice.

hi trevor,
yes, i will slow down. i have to admit, when you sent me this last post about finding the mgp file i got more confused. the reason is that in the earlier post, you told me to find a vsp file.

so, i went back through all of your postings, and started all over again. i think that the first time i tried it i may have inserted the file in the storybook. so i went back and made sure i put in the timeline. i saved as jolsons test create disc. then went to step 2, deleted and saved. this time i went back into SHARE/ CREATE DISC, and in ADD MEDIA, clicked on 2nd icon on the left, VSP, i opened and tried to add my video file jolsons test but pop up box said, jolsons test .vsp is empty. choose another another project file.

i know you told me in your last post to look for a mpg file, but that didn't make sense because you told me earlier to make sure that i was using a vsp file. so, i didn't follow that part of your instructions.

 :o so now i feel rather foolish, for not being able to move through the steps without having these issues.

i may try to contact someone that works on video studio projects. i don't want to frustrate you , because by now you may not have much more patience with me. is there any way i can get a referral to contact someone in my area (california bay area near S.F)? perhaps i can pay a fee to get some instructions, so i can finish up this project, and burn it. i'm not sure how to find someone who is an expert with video sudio. let me know, i noticed that there is a moderator from the silicon valley in ca. this is relatively close to where i live...
thank you for your help,
jolson

Hi Jolson

There seems to be some confusion here.

I want you to insert a video file, an Mpeg to the burner module.

If I have given the impression then a VSP is required then I apologise.
I haven¡¦t had time to read the other posts, but I will.

We started these posts with the intension of burning a DVD containing your unedited video file, just to see if the process would work.
To do this we insert the video file.

Oh and by the way, I also feel a little foolish by confusing you.

Not to worry we can work through this, I¡¦ve all the time in the world, and patience that never runs out, I may be just a little slow in replying.

So run through the burn process again and insert your Mpeg file. (From the first icon)
I¡¦m sure it will work ok.

Then we will move on to the project (the VSP) that¡¦s giving you problems.
