Playback is choppy?

Post by Mousenose »

I am new to this board and I am not any computer wiz or anything but when I bought Ulead it worked just fien and now that I have become more advanced in my movie making the payback is choppy and will freeze up on one clip. I make Equine Music Videos and AMV's on youtube using this program so when I tried to make a video to the song Butterfly Mega Mix I had clips full of effects, flashes, trasitions etc. so when I go to preview the first 2 seconds of what I had gotten done it freezes up on one clip and gives me very choppy playback. Is there anyway I can fix this? It has happend to a lot of other people and youtube and they all tell me that they just learn to live with it or they buy another program but I don't want to do that I want to fix my problem. Is Ulead not built for this type of work?

Welcome to the forums,

Preview playback is not going to be smooth, especially if you do have a complex project. VS must put everything together "on-the-fly". If you're using the more highly compressed video clips, and your PC is not one of the more powerful ones, this can be expected.

However we don't know anything about the properties of the clips, your project settings, or your system, so trying to troubleshoot the problem is next to impossible. Please read this post, and return with as much of the information as possible.

One work-around would be to set your Preview Playback to High-Quality. This is done in the Preferences dialog (keyboard shortcut F6 or File menu>Preferences). Then when you want to preview a short segment of your project, select a Preview Range. Make sure your in Project mode not Clip mode, and select a Mark-In/Mark-Out. A red line should appear over your timeline, this is the Preview Range indicator. Now when you want to preview the segment, VS will render a temp file of that segment.

Oh and BTW, VideoStudio is not an Operating System...;)

Thanks for the help. I fixed the issue. It seems that the avi files don't give as good playback as the mpg files do. Well problem solved now! ^-^

Glad you have it working for you now.. :D :D :D

However I disagree about the MPEG files playing better. IF the "avi" files are DV, and not some other highly compressed file type such as DivX..

I also have choppy playback when I preview my project. But with the smart proxy files it plays a lot smoother. The only problem is it's very long to create those files. I usually create a bunch of files then I go do something else and I come back later to edit my project.
