Icon instead of a thumbnail
Icon instead of a thumbnail
I have all my pictures in separate albums and I am able to view them in Thumbnail format. Last week I downloaded a new Microsoft update and since then all the new pictures that I scan and save or the ones that I get from my e-mail come up with an Icon instead of a thumbnail. My settings must have changed when I updated my MS program. What can I do to get my new pictures to show up as thumbnails like all the others in that same album? Janet
Windows Explorer
Yes, my pictures are in Window Explorer. I clicked on the View icon and changed it to display icons. They all came up with the same icon that shows up on your screen, except the three that I recently saved. They have a different icon. When I change it back to thumbnails, they all showed up in thumbnails except the same 3 that still come up unchanged with a different icon. I hope that this makes sence to you. Janet
type of file
I have been looking at every thing and I have come up with one difference. When I click on the properties of my old pictures under "type of file" it says "JPEG Image. The new ones that do not come up in thumbnail form under "type of file" say "file".
I have just tried it again by saving a picture from my e-mail and another from my scanner. I made sure that I saved them both as a JPG/JPEG file. They once again do not come in thumbnail format.
I hope that this observation gets me one step closer. Janet

What OS are you running, Vista, XP, Win2000?
There have been some problems with some Operating Systems providing thumbnails for UFO files, but I haven't came across the OS not showing thumbnails for JPEG images.
When you right-click on one of these "JPEG" images, and select properties it just says "File"? I would tend to think there is something wrong with your OS.

Janet,
When you click the button I mentioned earlier - go to the one at the bottom of the list [Details] you will now see the files as a long list.
1. Do the files have the letters jpg at the end?
example:
If it looks like the first list - check to see that each line has a dot and the three letters at the end ".jpg"
If some do and some don't - example

Do I have to type .jpg everytime
When I renamed the picture with a dot and jpg, it worked. Does that mean that from now on everytime I name a picture from my scanner or from my e-mail, I will have to add "a dot and jpg" as part of the name? I always save the file as a jpg file. I never had to add it as part of the name. Is that common?
I am using Windows XP. Thanks, Janet

Well we have now identified the problem - the pictures are being saved without the file extension. We now have to find out why.
When you scan a picture what do you do.
Try and describe as best you can.
Example:
I start PhotoImpact
I then select file - import from scanner
I scan the document and close the scanner
I then select file Save (or file Save as) and I select JPG format
I type a name in the box asking me for a filename.
Hopefully we will see where things are going wrong.

I believe that I use the same steps that you do
1…I click on PhotoImpact to start the program
2…I click on the scanner icon
3…I click on Preview
4…I crop the picture and then click on scan
5…I then select file Save as
6…I type a name in the box asking for a file name
7…I select the save file as type JPG
8…I assign the folder where I want the picture stored
9…I click on OK
I just now did it and typed the steps as I was doing it and again the picture came up as an icon.

It sounds as though there is a problem with your PhotoImpact installation.
Make sure you have the set up files and then go to the Windows Control Panel, Find the Add/Remove Programs Icon and select it.
Find PhotoImpact in the list and uninstall it.
Restart your computer.
Re-install PhotoImpact.
Now try scanning again to see if the problem is still there.

PhotoImpact 11
I have 4 Ulead CDs:
1. PhotoImpact 11
2. PhotoImpact 11 Bonus CD
3. PhotoImpact 4
4. PhotoImpact XL Upgrade CD
At one time I believe that my husband had all of them installed. 18 months ago, my computer crashed and I believe that all I installed was PhotoImpact 11. It worked fine till now. Is that the only one that I have to reinstall now? Janet

PhotoImpact
I just now looked at my programs and it has UleadSystems (Unlead Auto Detector) listed as well. Do I have to do anything with that? Janet
PI installed
I uninstalled and reinstalled the two Cds. The Bonus CD gave me a lot of stuff that I may never use. For now I will slip them in my unused desktop file.
All this did not solve my problem. I am just glad that I can add ".jpg" to my file name for now.
Reinstalling it made changes to my scanning. Now when I scan, the screen goes to HP Precision Scan Pro and after I crop the picture, I finally found out that I have to return to PhotoImpact to save it.
Before it use to stay on the same screen and I could crop and save it all from the same screen. I quess change keeps me on my toes. Janet

I have fixed one of these problems. I am learning a great deal here. I highlighted "ScanJet 6300C (with scanned image fixed)" and it now works like it use to. When it got switched to "ScanJet 6300C" I had to go back and forth from "PI, to HP Precision Scan Pro and after I crop the picture, I finally found out that I have to return to PhotoImpact to save it." I don't know why but the (with scanned image fixed) made the difference. I am glad that I tried it.
I am sure that having to add ".jpg" after my file name after it was saved in JPG format, must be just one of those small changes that occurred after I downloaded an update. Janet
