I was doing some work with an M2P video file demuxed from a VOB and all was going fine. Decided to install my SP3 patch but after that the M2P file would cause MSP to lockup if I made any attempt to play the file from the timeline. Even just clicking on the scrub bar crashed it.
Rolled back to SP2 and all was good again.
Ideas why ?

No, but I suggest you re-demux it in 7.3 and see what happens. Yhere have been changes which could conceivably affect compatibility between files generated in older systems. Please let us know how you get on.
