Hi all, I'm new...
I have a AMD Turion 64 X2 with Vista H. Premium 32 bit. I bought VideoStudio 11.5 Plus but I have several problems...

I always have a 5 seconds delay from the SPACE button press to the playback itself.
I just set peripheral control to "none", tryed to uncheck/recheck every video parameter optimization (in Preferences) but the problem still persists.

I captured a footage with VirtualDub, because sometimes the capture area freezes me the entire system with a blue screen (regarding a USB failure, I suppose it's due to my external hard disk).

Once I've been captured from VS but at playback I always wait 5 seconds.
I also tried to activate the advanced proxy (with the icon and in the preferences) set with 352x240 but it's equal... (and I haven't noticed on disk activity)

I also have Premiere Pro and Elements but I never had those kinda problems.

What are the video clip properties, right-click select properties and post them back here...

In the Preferences dialog (File menu>Preferences or keyboard shortcut of F6) do you have Playback mode set to High-Quality or Instant? With High-Quality playback VS must render to a temp file before previewing. You might try changing it to Instant Playback.

Are you trying to preview in Project Mode or Clip Mode?

I didn't tried the Clip Mode, but it's faster to playback, it takes about 1 second.

Another thing: I also tried to use VS as Administrator and with XP S.P. 2 emulation, but without results.

I'm in Europe, for my tests I just used some 1 minute footage:

PAL (25 fps)
File Microsoft AVI
24 bit, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Bottom field first
DV Video Codec, type 1
DV Audio - PAL 32,000 kHz; 12 bit; Stereo (strange, I was set 16 bits into the camera)

I also tried with a different format (i.e. with 48kHz 16 bit Stereo audio), using files created by another video editing program (movie edit pro) but with no luck.

The playback mode was set to Instant, but also in High Quality it does the same.
I tried to do all my tests into C:\ (temporary folder included) but there's no difference...

Sometimes, when I was change some external disk's "path" directory and uncheck it (like the folder proxy) the program warns me it will be used the default directory because the specified was missing (sometimes the disk unit etter changes).

So I changed all the paths to a local C:\temp directory, also those grayed, but nothing changes.

I seen you have Vista, do you never had this problem? I start to suspect it could be a bug due to the european format...

If you transferred your video using firewire (IEEE 1394), AND you did have it set to 16bit, it should also reflect this in the properties. Firewire transfer is nothing more than a duplication of, or copying the data from the tape in the camcorder to your computer. Nothing changes in the transfer.

Yes I do have Vista on my laptop. Currently I don not have it on, but I will set it up to see if I get the lag time. This 5-sec delay should not have anything to do with the European, PAL video. I know I don't get it on my desktop running XP, and using my external HDD.

I've noticed that I do get a slight lag, varying from 1-3 secs depending on the complexity of my project. The more complex (overlays, effects, ect) the longer it takes VS to throw that together for a preview. This does not include High-Quality, just instant. This did not change from XP to Vista. Another variable to this would be if you're using in Clip Display mode, Thumbnail only, Thumbnail and File Name or File Name only. Using Thumbnail only, you're PC will have to display a thumbnail for each frame of video. This can slow things down. I tend to use Thumbnail and File name, unless I need to make a Frame-accurate cut.

If you're running several other applications or programs at the same time will also tend to slow things down. Try limiting or eliminating other activities while editing. That way most of your PC resources will be available for VS..
